In the first lesson the goal is to build comfort in the water and introduce the basic mechanics of surfing. Start on the sand explaining board parts, ocean awareness, and safety. Demonstrate the pop up step by step, then have them practice it repeatedly on the beach so the movement becomes natural. In the water focus on proper paddling form with long smooth strokes and keeping their chest lifted on the board. Push them into a few small whitewater waves so they can practice standing up without worrying about catching the wave themselves. The main goal is confidence, balance, and getting familiar with the feeling of standing on the board.
The remaining lessons focus on helping surfers choose the right board for their ability and understand how different types of waves affect their surfing. Start by explaining how board length, width, thickness, and volume influence stability, paddling speed, and maneuverability, and help them identify what board size suits their skill level and the conditions they typically surf. Introduce common wave types such as flatter rolling waves, steeper waves, and hollow waves, and explain how each requires slightly different positioning and technique. Then explain different breaks including beach breaks, point breaks, and reef breaks, discussing how waves form in each environment and what surfers should expect. The goal of this lesson is to build their knowledge so they can choose appropriate equipment and understand how to approach different surf spots with confidence.
The fourth lesson focuses on independence and putting everything together. Begin by reviewing ocean conditions and choosing the right spot to paddle out. Help them position themselves in the lineup and identify approaching waves. Teach them when to start paddling, how to match the speed of the wave, and when to pop up. Encourage them to catch waves on their own while giving feedback on positioning, paddling power, and timing. By the end of the lesson the goal is for them to confidently paddle into waves and ride them without assistance.
In the second lesson focus on control of the board once they are standing. Begin with a quick review of paddling and pop up technique, then introduce how weight distribution affects movement. Explain how leaning slightly on the back foot lifts the nose and helps initiate turns, while shifting weight forward generates speed. Practice simple left and right turns on small whitewater waves and demonstrate how shoulders and hips lead the direction of the board. Encourage them to look where they want to go and use gentle pressure on their toes or heels to guide the board.
The third lesson introduces ocean knowledge so they begin understanding when and where to surf. Explain the basics of tides and how they affect wave shape and break location, introduce swell direction and how it influences which beaches work best, and teach how to identify rip currents and how to safely use them to paddle out or escape if needed. Spend time observing the ocean before entering the water and point out channels, peaks, and sets. This lesson builds awareness and respect for the ocean so they can make smarter decisions when surfing.
