What is open play, and how do I join?
Updated
Open play is a game that a coach hosts for players at about the same level. The coach sets up the courts, rotates partners, and keeps play moving. There is no lesson plan. You come to play.
What you see before you join
Each open play page shows:
- The level band, such as "Level 3.0 to 3.5". Pick a game that matches how you play.
- The format, such as rotating doubles, round robin, king of the court, or open courts.
- The schedule. Most open play repeats every week, for example "Every Monday · 5:00 to 6:30 PM". The page shows the next date.
- The host. The page says "Hosted by" and names the coach.
- The price per player, per session. Open play usually costs less than a clinic.
Open play is for adults.
How to join in the Student App
- Find open play in the Student App, in one of two places:
- On Home, under Happening nearby.
- In the Nearby tab.
- Tap the game to see the details: the schedule, the level, who's going, the host, and the location.
- Tap Join and check the price. The sheet shows the price per player, any card fee, and the total.
- Choose how many players you are signing up. Give a first name for each extra player.
- Tap Pay. The app charges the card you saved with TeachMe.To. To use another card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, tap Change.
The game shows under Upcoming on Home right away, and you get a confirmation email. To see all your games and lessons by date, tap View all next to Upcoming. If the coach asks you to sign a waiver or answer a few questions, you see them on the game's page.
Your bank may ask you to confirm the payment. Follow the steps on the screen. You are charged once.
Some games ask for details the app can't collect yet, such as each player's age for a youth camp. For those, the button says Continue on the web, and you finish on the web page.
When nothing is near you yet
The Nearby tab looks up to 50 miles away when there is little within 25 miles. It also shows your own coaches' sessions at any distance, and online sessions on iPhone. If there is still nothing, you can:
- Tap Notify me to get one notification when open play or a clinic starts within 25 miles. You get at most one a week.
- Tap Ask (your coach's name) to host open play. The app opens a message to your coach with the request filled in. Nothing is sent until you tap send.
How to join on the web
- Open the open play page on your coach's site, under Open play.
- Tap See pricing and dates. The next session is already selected.
- Pick the sessions you want. You can keep only the next one, switch to a later week, or add several weeks. Each date shows how many players are going once a few have signed up. A full date can't be picked.
- Choose how many players you are signing up.
- Enter your details and pay. Your coach may add a small card fee at checkout. If no date is selected, the button reads Pick a date until you choose one.
You pay once for every date you picked, and each date keeps its own signup list.
Cancellation
- You can cancel for free until the cutoff shown on the page before you pay. The cutoff is 24 hours before the session unless the coach chose 12 or 48 hours.
- After the cutoff, spots are non-refundable.
- If the coach cancels the session, everyone gets a full refund.
