Your first lessonLesson 1: Foundations and Fundamentals
Objective: Introduce the basics of ball control, passing, and movement. Build comfort with the ball.
• Warm-Up (10 min): Light jogging, dynamic stretches, ball at feet (dribbling in space).
• Ball Familiarity (15 min):
• Toe taps and sole rolls (stationary, then moving).
• Inside-outside touches (working both feet).
• Passing Basics (20 min):
• Partner passing, focusing on inside of the foot.
• Add “receive and move” (first touch away from pressure).
• Dribbling and Turning (15 min):
• Cones set in lines: practice dribbling with close control.
• Introduce simple turns (inside cut, outside cut).
Lesson 2-3Lesson 2: Control, Awareness, and Decision Making
Objective: Improve first touch, introduce positioning, and encourage decision making under pressure.
• Warm-Up (10 min): Light jog, dynamic stretches, quick passing rondo (keep-away in small circle).
• First Touch (15 min):
• Receiving passes and moving into space.
• Emphasis on opening body to the field.
• Passing with Movement (20 min):
• Triangle passing drill (player passes, moves to new cone, always creating angles).
• Two-touch passing (forces control and quick decisions).
• 1v1 Drills (15 min):
• Players take turns attacking and defending in a small grid.
• Focus on dribbling moves and defensive stance.
Youth players
Working with kidsWhen I work with kids, I make sure that fun always comes first. It’s important for children to remember that soccer is a game, and when they’re enjoying themselves, they’re more engaged and willing to learn. I design activities as games rather than drills, so while they’re laughing and competing, they’re also picking up the fundamentals like dribbling, passing, and teamwork. By keeping the sessions playful and positive, kids naturally develop their skills and build a love for the sport that will carry with them as they grow.
Working with teenagersWhen I work with teenagers, I adapt my lessons to be more structured and challenging while still keeping the sessions enjoyable. At that age, players are ready to refine their technical skills and begin understanding tactical aspects of the game, so I focus on drills that encourage decision making under pressure, teamwork, and communication. I also make sure to connect with them on a personal level, creating an environment where they feel motivated to push themselves but comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. The goal is to help them grow as players while building confidence both on and off the field.
