Hi I'm Derek! I recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz, where I played four years of college soccer as a winger and an outside back. Since graduation, I have continued to stay involved with the sport both as a fan (come on Arsenal) and by playing in the SFSFL and other pick-up games around the city. As a coach, I use my experience with technical drills I have found most effective during my 16+ years as a player, and shape my sessions around whatever skills you'd like to work on, whether that be finishing, defending, technique, etc.
"The lesson was pretty good, especially since I appreciated how close Derek liked to stay nearby during the drill. Though I still need to get more comfortable with the ball, I feel like I made some decent progress, and the lesson highlighted that proximity can really help with focus. Hopefully, next time I can build more confidence with ball control. If you’re looking for a coach who keeps things close and helpful, Derek might be worth a try.

Having played competitively since high school and with the USTA, I reached my highest play level of 4.5. I have also coached girls' and boys' high school tennis teams. I’ve been golfing for over 30 years and as I grew older I’ve learned to maximize what I have. I’m 5’6” and though I consider myself an athlete, I do believe a good swing can be achieved by good fundamentals and what I call positioning. By ingraining certain aspects of a swing, we can continue to improve by doing. I’m just a low-handicap golfer who want to teach average golfers good fundamentals as a takeaway, so you can start to improve on your own. I’m not a teaching professional, but I was a design instructor at an art school for over 17 years, I hope I can make improving your golf game fun.

I've been in the water since I was very young. I started as a Junior Lifeguard then was seasonal Lifeguard in Newport Beach, CA. I've surfed all over the world. I've pursued big swells in Indonesia as well as mainland Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Iceland.

I started taking guitar lessons at age 10 but, like many beginners, grew frustrated and quit. A few years later, teaching myself Little Wing reignited my passion. Eventually, I dove into forming bands, performing live, and touring. At 16, a chance encounter with a jazz guitarist changed my path—I learned you could study guitar in college. I went on to earn both my Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Music (Jazz Concentration). Along the way, I struggled with bad habits, self-doubt, and the urge to compare myself to others—until a mentor shared three life-changing lessons that still guide me today: "Never compare yourself to others." There will always be someone ahead of you and someone behind you. Music isn’t a competition—it’s about growth, expression, and lifting others up alongside you. "Don’t expect too much too fast." Progress takes time. Remember why you started in the first place and be patient with yourself. "Learn to enjoy the process." This was the most valuable lesson of all. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but if you love the journey, you’ll never stop improving. These principles continue to guide my playing and teaching philosophy today. My goal as an instructor is not just to teach you how to play the guitar, but to help you enjoy the process, develop confidence, and create music that feels truly your own.

At the age of 9, I discovered basketball and became obsessed with it. “Basketball is life” was my motto growing up—from finishing team practices at the gym, then going straight to a local basketball court for pickup games. I considered basketball courts my second home, and in many ways, they still are. My playing journey took me through several years in AAU leagues, starting with the Bay Area Asian Sports Dragons as a youth. As a four-year varsity player, I earned MVP and MIP awards in middle school and high school, and was honored to make the PAL NorCal All-League First and Second Teams during my later years.
