About your tennis coach

I’m the founder of SBA Tennis & Pickleball, a Bay Area academy focused on delivering high-quality, structured, and fun tennis and pickleball instruction for players of all ages and levels. While I work directly with students, SBA is more than just one coach—I lead a team of experienced, high-energy instructors who consistently deliver professional, engaging lessons across all programs. Our coaches work with everyone from beginners to advanced players, with a strong emphasis on proper technique, game understanding, and long-term development. All lessons take place on our reserved courts at Cupertino, so you’re guaranteed a court every session—no waiting, no interruptions, and no risk of losing your time like at public courts. My background as a licensed physical therapist with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy allows me to bring a unique, results-driven approach to coaching. I specialize in stroke biomechanics, movement efficiency, and injury prevention, helping players improve faster while staying healthy. With over a decade of coaching experience and a 5.0 NTRP playing level, I’ve worked with players ranging from young beginners to advanced competitors. Through SBA Tennis & Pickleball, we’ve built a reputation for making learning simple, structured, and enjoyable—whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time or looking to take your game to the next level.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first lesson is focused on getting to know you—your experience level, learning style, and goals. We’ll assess how you move and swing, introduce proper groundstroke fundamentals (forehands and backhands), and make sure you’re comfortable. We’ll also discuss realistic expectations based on how often you plan to practice both during and outside of lessons.
Lesson 11+From here, lessons are tailored to your progress and goals. This often includes more point play, match scenarios, and strategy, helping you transition into a more competitive and confident player.
Lesson 4-10These lessons continue to place a strong emphasis on groundstrokes (forehands and backhands), with the primary goal of getting you to rally consistently back and forth. Once you reach this stage, improvement tends to accelerate. We’ll also begin introducing volleys and serves to round out your game.
Lesson 2-3These sessions continue building strong groundstroke foundations, with a focus on improving technique, contact point, and consistency on forehands and backhands. You’ll start developing better control of the ball while building confidence through repetition.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonThe first lesson focuses on understanding your current level, strengths, and areas for improvement. We’ll evaluate your strokes, movement, and match play tendencies, while also learning your goals (e.g., league play, tournaments, UTR/NTRP improvement). From there, we’ll identify key technical or strategic adjustments and set clear, realistic expectations based on your commitment to practice both during and outside of lessons.
Lesson 11+From here, training becomes highly individualized based on your goals. Sessions often include live point play, match simulation, advanced strategy, and mental toughness. We’ll continue fine-tuning technical details while focusing on winning patterns, adapting to different opponents, and performing confidently in competitive environments.
Lesson 4-10These lessons focus heavily on developing reliable, high-quality groundstrokes that hold up in competitive situations, while integrating serves, returns, and net play. You’ll work on constructing points, recognizing patterns, and improving decision-making. The goal is to build a game that translates directly into match play, with increased consistency, pace, and control.
Lesson 2-3We begin refining technique within your existing strokes, focusing on efficiency, consistency under pressure, and shot tolerance. There’s an emphasis on improving footwork, spacing, and ball control, while starting to incorporate more intentional patterns and situational drills.

Youth players
Working with kidsLessons with kids are adapted based on age, attention span, and experience level. The younger the child, the more emphasis there is on coordination, movement, and fun, high-energy games to keep them engaged and motivated. We incorporate a lot of creative activities that build foundational athletic skills while introducing tennis in an enjoyable way. As kids get older, lessons still remain fun and engaging, but we’re able to place more focus on technique, consistency, and skill development.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, lessons are tailored to their goals and experience level. For many, we work toward more competitive objectives such as making a high school team or preparing for tournaments, with a stronger emphasis on technique, strategy, and match play. At the same time, we’re always flexible—whether the goal is competitive improvement or simply learning and enjoying the game, lessons are structured to match what the player wants to get out of the experience.

What you need to bringWe recommend bringing a water bottle. Athletic shoes and appropriate athletic attire are highly recommended. For outdoor sessions, a hat and/or sunglasses and sunblock are also recommended for sun protection.

What I can bringWe provide all necessary equipment for lessons, including plenty of rackets for students to borrow if needed, as well as balls and other training equipment.

Brandon is an amazing tennis coach and he is great with kids. My boys have been taking lessons with him for more than 3 years. Brandon makes every lesson fun and keeps the boys engaged with his enthusiasm and great positive energy. He also focuses on technique, as well as strategy. With Brandon's coaching, both my boys have shown a tremendous amount of improvement.

We are big fans of Coach Brandon and South Bay Area Tennis. We started working with Brandon a few years ago. My kids take a private lesson with him and have enjoyed their class. He keeps it interesting and really knows how to challenge young kids at varying levels of age and skill. It's not often you can find a great teacher that has passion so glad we found him!
Suhardi
We are so lucky to have Brandon as our tennis coach. He is very passionate about teaching tennis at different levels. He is always well prepared for each lesson, and his coaching techniques are very detailed and personalized which suit your personal needs. We really enjoyed learning tennis with him
Charlie
A long overdue review! My son began 1:1 lessons with Brandon when he was 8. My son has the type of personality to quit when things get hard, and Brandon knows all the tricks to keep his motivation up! He is extremely warm, approachable and fun and I honestly cannot think of a better coach (in many ways) for my son. My son is now 11 and - despite still not being overly keen on losing ;) - tells me regularly that tennis is his favorite thing. If you're lucky enough to get Brandon as your coach, or your child's coach, you've chosen a winner.
Rita
My son (6) has been going to weekly group classes for almost a year. We really like the coaches here. Both Coach Brandon & Coach Jovan are very good at coaching young kids and also keep the kids engaged. I also appreciate the way how Coach Brandon run the clinic a lot! It gives us a lot of flexibilities to fit in my kid and my family's schedules, which is a huge bonus!!
Sireesha
Brandon is a really great instructor. He has an exceptional work ethic and communicates well. He listens to what you say, especially with regards to what you are looking to get out of the sessions with him and focuses on that. He is very good at identifying issues with your stroke or game and will isolate the issue and fix them with drills. You will see an improvement in every session. If he notices that you've regressed with something in the future sessions he will work towards correcting it again right away. He is very good at explaining what he wants you to do, is patient and very encouraging and works really hard along with you. He is not pushy at all but at the same time will make you push your limits. All the sessions I took with him were a lot of fun and helped my game substantially.
