About Zach

Hi, my name is Zach Weisz. I most recently served as the First Assistant Coach at Gardner-Webb University, working with hitters, outfielders, and leading the offense. Prior to that, I was the Director of Baseball Operations at Coastal Carolina, where I helped the team win the 2023 Sun Belt Championship, make it to the championship of our own Regional, and reach the championship of the Clemson Regional in 2024. I began my coaching career as a Graduate Assistant at Cal State Fullerton, where I also played and was part of two Big West Championships, three Regionals, two Super Regionals, and a trip to the 2017 College World Series. I hold a Master’s degree in History and a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies, both from Cal State Fullerton. I’ve been fortunate to coach and play at the highest levels of college baseball, and I’m passionate about helping players develop their game.

The first lesson for a beginner player

J

Coach Jacob

baseball coach

For the first two lessons, I would evaluate the players’ skills through targeted drills, including pitching, fielding, and batting practice. The focus would be on assessing strengths and identifying areas for improvement while reinforcing proper mechanics and form. I’d introduce more complex throwing drills, like double plays and relay throws, and start with batting against live pitching to gauge timing and power. My goal would be to set a strong foundation for high-level play and establish clear, personalized goals for each athlete.

What do coaches say about teaching kids and youth?

J

Coach Jacob

baseball coach

I would adapt my lessons to focus on making the game fun and easy to understand. I would use simple drills that break down the basics like catching, throwing, and hitting in playful ways, such as mini-games and races. My main goal would be to build their confidence and keep them excited about learning, using lots of positive encouragement and celebrating every small achievement. I would also focus on teaching teamwork and good sportsmanship, so they learn to enjoy playing with others while building their skills.
