In the first lesson, I focus on getting to know the studentβs goals, experience, and comfort level with their voice. We begin with gentle vocal warm-ups to observe natural coordination without pressure. I introduce basic foundations such as posture, breath awareness, and simple phonation exercises. The goal is to create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable, understood, and leaves with an early sense of ease and direction in their voice.
In the second and third lessons, we begin building consistency in foundational technique. We continue developing breath support, posture, and balanced phonation, while introducing simple exercises that reinforce coordination and vocal freedom. Students may begin applying these skills to very simple vocal lines or easy repertoire in their chosen style. Each lesson builds gradually so the student gains confidence, awareness, and a clearer understanding of healthy vocal production.
Drills:
* lip trills
* straw phonation
* sirens
From the fourth through tenth lessons, students begin developing a more stable technical foundation and applying it more consistently to repertoire. We continue strengthening breath support, resonance balance, and vocal coordination, while gradually introducing more structured songs in their chosen style. We also begin working on phrasing, diction, and musical expression. By this stage, students typically experience noticeable improvements in vocal control, confidence, and consistency, along with better practice habits
Drills:
* 5-note scales
* arpeggios
* breath timing exercises
* resonance awareness exercises
In ongoing study, students continue refining vocal technique while expanding repertoire and artistic expression. We work on advanced coordination skills such as agility, resonance refinement, stylistic interpretation, and performance readiness. Lessons also focus on developing independence as a musicianβlearning how to practice efficiently, troubleshoot challenges, and prepare for auditions or performances. My goal is for students to develop a healthy, expressive, and sustainable vocal technique that supports long-term artistic growth and confidence
Drills: Students continue refining technique through more advanced variations of earlier exercises while applying them to repertoire
In the first lesson with an advanced student, I focus on understanding their current vocal technique, artistic goals, and any technical challenges they are experiencing. We do targeted vocal exercises and repertoire work to assess breath efficiency, registration balance, resonance, and stylistic approach. The goal is to quickly identify strengths and areas for refinement, and to establish a clear, individualized direction for continued advanced study
In the second and third lessons, we begin addressing specific technical and artistic goals identified in the first session. This may include work on breath coordination, register transitions, vowel shaping, agility, diction, and stylistic interpretation. We also begin refining repertoire choices or audition material, focusing on consistency, control, and expressive clarity under technical demands
Drills:
* vowel tuning
* registration balance exercises
* resonance adjustment work
From the fourth through tenth lessons, we deepen technical refinement and artistic interpretation across repertoire. Work includes advanced breath management, resonance tuning, vocal flexibility, diction precision, and stylistic authenticity across genres such as opera, art song, and musical theatre. Students also develop performance skills, including phrasing, emotional communication, and stamina, with a focus on preparing material for auditions, performances, or professional use
Drills:
* agility (fast scales)
* arpeggios across range
* vowel modification
* diction/IPA (if classical)
* resonance tuning exercises
* breath efficiency patterns
In ongoing advanced study, the focus shifts toward mastery, artistry, and long-term vocal sustainability. We continue refining technical efficiency while expanding interpretive depth, stylistic versatility, and stage presence. Students work on high-level repertoire, audition and performance preparation, and developing a distinct artistic identity. My goal is to support singers in achieving freedom, consistency, and expressive depth while maintaining healthy vocal technique over time
Drills:
Students continue refining technique through increasingly individualized vocalises tailored to repertoire demands, focusing on efficiency, artistry, and performance consistency
