About your basketball coach

Xavier McDaniel Jr., son of the Seattle SuperSonics legend, has transitioned from his basketball career to focus on skill and strength training. A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Xavier first gained recognition as a high school champion at Hammond School, playing alongside the renowned Seventh Woods. He continued to excel in college basketball, spending two years at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley under the esteemed coach Lew Hill, where he developed his skills for a professional career. Unfortunately, Xavier’s journey in professional basketball was impacted by a series of injuries, limiting him to two and a half full seasons across international leagues and the American TBL. Now, shifting his focus, he is completing his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Eastern Washington University, through Bellevue College. His mission is to combine his passion for sports and psychology to help individuals heal from trauma, focusing on the connection between mind, body, and spirit. As a coach, Xavier uses basketball as a tool not just for athletic development, but to guide others toward personal growth, whether that leads to a career in professional sports or simply a more balanced life off the court.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonTeaching the bare fundamentals of basketball: - Basic rules - Proper shooting form - Introduction to ball handling - Proper defensive technique
Lesson 11+By then we should be working on counters to moves that we are working on. I expect you to be able to know all of the drills we will do over the course of the workout by now. By this point you should see massive improvement in the way you move and how the ball feels in your hands.
Lesson 4-10At this point the basics should be mastered and we can get into cone work. Ball handling with cones to simulate handling the ball through defenders, spot shooting, shooting while on the move, and advanced defensive technique.
Lesson 2-3Reinforcing basic skills that we acquired in our first session. Upping the workload to make sure you’ve mastered basics by then. Now we can focus on skill development more than skill acquisition.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWe’ll run a set of drills and play 1 on 1 to get a feel for your skill level and if you’re advanced enough we’ll get straight into bag work. Coming up with a development plan depending on your play style.
Lesson 4-10Once you reach a certain level of skill it’s about reinforcing what you already know. Being great at basketball means you have to do the same thing over, and over, and over again. You have to love this process and never stop working, once you do someone will be right there ready to do what you didn’t feel like doing.
Lesson 2-3Every day will consist of the same basic workout (spot shooting, shooting while on the move, ball handling, shooting off the dribble, defensive play, strengthening and conditioning) followed by bag work. Tailoring moves and counters to those moves to your playstyle.

Youth players
Working with kidsMy approach with kids is much “softer” I focus on the fun aspects of basketball rather than pure skill development to give them a sense of how fun the game can be! Better for them in the long run to enjoy the sport now before they decide to go all in!

Working with teenagersTeenagers all get the same lessons that anyone else would receive from me. They should know how tough coaches are going to be going forward and I want them to prepare for that and life in general. My workouts are tailored for more developed athletes so they’ll feel right at home in the gym with me!

What you need to bring- Their own ball - A positive attitude and the willingness to learn!

What I can bring-Basketballs (2 men’s, 1 women’s) -Weighted Vests -Cones -Medicine bands

Coach Xavier is wonderful with the kids. He’s patient, encouraging, and knows how to explain things in a way they understand. The kids feel comfortable and motivated around him, and we’ve seen their confidence grow. We really appreciate his positive energy and dedication.
Noah
We enjoy watching our son learn and grow over the course of each workout! He’s been wanting to take basketball more seriously and Coach X is great for his development and confidence!
Thomas
He’s been teaching my son the basics of basketball down to shooting form to the rules. Coach X does a very good job at explaining the rules and why they’re in place, highly recommended!
Jeramiah
Very knowledgeable about the game and finds ways to personally connect with the student in order to help them understand.
Luther
His approach to the game is different from a lot of coaches. He stresses how important little things are and how sharp fundamentals will get us further than most fancy things. He always says simpler is better in most cases.
Zeke
I really like how with everything that he teaches he also goes over the weaknesses of the moves and how to play against it.
