About your basketball coach

Hi! I’m Coach Dre, and I specialize in helping players unlock their scoring potential while mastering the fundamentals of the game. Whether it’s putting points on the board, creating your own shot, or finishing strong under pressure, my coaching focuses on teaching players how to score efficiently in every situation—even off defensive stops, fast breaks, and tough matchups. My approach is personalized, engaging, and results-driven. Each lesson begins with a skills assessment to identify strengths and areas for improvement. From there, I design custom training sessions that mix technical drills, situational plays, and competitive game-like scenarios. Players not only improve their scoring mechanics—like shooting off the dribble, finishing at the rim, and creating space—but also learn how smart defense, awareness, and positioning can lead directly to points. I work with players of all ages and skill levels, helping beginners develop confidence and solid fundamentals, while advanced athletes refine their offensive arsenal and decision-making under pressure. Lessons are fun, challenging, and fast-paced—I emphasize learning through action, so every session feels like real-game experience while building habits that translate to lasting success on the court. Outside of basketball, I bring energy, patience, and a passion for mentorship. I love seeing players grow not just as athletes but as confident, strategic thinkers who understand the game on a deeper level. My goal is simple: to make you a more effective, versatile, and unstoppable scorer while teaching you the full game behind it. Let’s turn your scoring potential into consistent results!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first session is all about getting to know the player -their current skill level, comfort with the ball, and overall movement on the court. I take time to build confidence, introduce key terminology, and make sure every drill feels achievable yet challenging. We start with a warm-up and coordination series, followed by simple skill assessments and hands-on correction. Favorite Drills: Cone Dribble Maze: Teaches ball control, body positioning, and hand-eye coordination. Form Shooting Progression: Close-range shooting with focus on balance, follow-through, and muscle memory. Defensive Slide & Recover Drill: Introduces footwork fundamentals and connects defense to scoring opportunities through quick transitions. By the end of the first lesson, the player will feel more comfortable with the ball, understand the flow of training, and leave motivated for what's next.
Lesson 11+Once a beginner reaches this stage, we focus on mastery, endurance, and consistency. The goal now is to transform good habits into automatic responses. Players start setting personal goals, such as shooting accuracy percentages or defensive stop counts, and we train with a more competitive edge. We also dive deeper into conditioning, timing, and mental toughness—what I call “finishing school for basketball.” Favorite Drills: Shot Chart Challenge: Track makes from multiple spots to improve efficiency. Defense-to-Offense Circuit: Fast-paced drill connecting steals, rebounds, and scoring transitions. Game Rep Simulation: Replicates real game scenarios to prepare for live competition. By this stage, players not only know how to play—they know how to think, react, and dominate. My goal is to ensure every athlete walks away ready to perform confidently in any game situation.
Lesson 4-10At this stage, we shift from learning skills to using those skills in motion. I begin layering in combination moves, real-time reads, and confidence-building challenges. Players start to develop a scorer’s mindset—knowing when to attack, pass, or pull up. Each lesson includes small scrimmage-style drills to simulate real scenarios and build instinct. We also track progress so players can see their growth. Favorite Drills: Two-Dribble Decision Drill: Forces players to make quick offensive reads. Catch, Rip, and Go: Teaches first-step explosiveness for scoring off the catch. Closeout-to-Counter Drill: Blends defense and offense—closing out, forcing a turnover, and finishing strong in transition. By lesson 10, players will have sharper mechanics, stronger game sense, and the ability to score from multiple situations.
Lesson 2-3Now that the basics are in place, we start building the core foundation of basketball: dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense. These sessions focus on rhythm, movement efficiency, and game awareness. We refine hand positioning, work on shooting off the catch, and introduce simple offensive reads. Every drill ties back to real-game application so players start understanding how to think the game as they learn it. Favorite Drills: Pound, Cross, and Attack Drill: Builds tight ball control while preparing to score off the dribble. Pass & Relocate Shooting: Teaches movement without the ball and shooting readiness. 1-on-1 Defensive Reaction: Helps players understand spacing, reaction time, and how good defense creates fast-break scoring chances. By lesson 3, players begin seeing noticeable improvement in confidence and control.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen working with kids, my main focus is building confidence, coordination, and love for the game. I keep lessons energetic, positive, and easy to follow-every drill has a purpose, but it's disguised as fun. I use creative games, short challenges, and praise to keep young players fully engaged and motivated. I break down skills into simple, repeatable steps and celebrate every small win-whether it's a first made layup, a clean dribble, or solid defensive stance. My goal is to teach fundamentals through movement and excitement, so kids develop good habits early without feeling pressured. Example Youth Drills: Dribble Relay Races - Builds control and agility while keeping things exciting. Mini Defense Tag - Teaches footwork and spacing through play. Bucket Countdown - Encourages focus and consistency while tracking progress. Every session ends on a high note with encouragement and a positive takeaway to boost each child's confidence and enthusias coming back

Working with teenagersWhen coaching teens, I focus on helping them understand the strategy and mental side of basketball while sharpening their technical skills. These lessons balance challenge and encouragement—I push them to compete, think critically, and take pride in their progress. I create an environment that feels real, respectful, and player-driven. We talk through game situations, break down film (when applicable), and practice advanced scoring moves, defensive reads, and on-court decision-making. My goal is to help them see how every drill connects to real competition and prepare them for school teams, AAU, or recreational leagues. Example Teen Drills: 3-Dribble Score Drill – Improves shot creation and control under pressure. Closeout & Counter Challenge – Builds defensive awareness and fast-break scoring instinct. Game IQ Situational Scrimmages – Teaches decision-making, teamwork, and composure. I emphasize discipline, effort, and self-belief—skills that go beyond basketball. Every session is designed to bring out the best in each player, both on the court and in their mindset.

What you need to bringAll you need to bring is your own ball, water, and a focused mindset-I'll handle the rest.

What I can bringI bring all the essentials for a high-quality, organized training session: Cones and markers for footwork and agility drills Resistance bands for strength and explosiveness work Training basketballs (indoor/outdoor depending on location) Shooting aids and dribbling tools for precision work A Bluetooth speaker to keep the energy up with music (if allowed at the location)

Coach Mathis really helped my son find his rhythm as a scorer. They worked on reading defenders, creating space, and staying locked in mentally. His points per game jumped after training with him, and he's more confident in taking the lead during games. Coach is knowledgeable, motivating, and from watching seems fun to train with. Some sessions seemed harder than others, and I see that made all the difference.

Coach DeAndre made basketball fun from the very first lesson. I started not knowing how to dribble properly, and now I can control the ball, shoot better, and even play defense without getting lost. He's patient, honest, encouraging, and always finds ways to make learning exciting. Every session feels like a game, not a chore! - Hampton Highschool
Ethan
Coach's sessions are intense and detailed. It was honestly one of the hardest things I've done as far as training goes. He doesn't just tell you what to do-he explains why it matters and how it fits into real-game situations. My shot mechanics, footwork, and overall confidence have grown a lot. He's the type of coach who pushes you to give 100% every time. - Riverdale Highschool

Before training with Coach Mathis, I struggled with finishing at the rim and shooting under pressure. After just a few lessons, I was scoring more consistently in my games. He teaches how defense can create scoring chances, and that changed how I play completely. He really cares about helping you improve and makes you believe in yourself. - Lovejoy Highschool
Caleb
My son loves training with Coach DeAndre! He's great with kids and keeps things fun while still teaching real fundamentals. Caleb looks forward to every session and is more confident on his church league and school team now. Coach DeAndre's energy and positivity make a huge difference.
