I had very successful amateur and collegiate careers before declaring professional status in 1981. I have enjoyed playing and teaching the game for over 47 years. My father, Boyd Barrett, taught golf for 50 years. My sister, Sharon Barrett, played on the LPGA Tour for 18 years and was a winner on the Tour. Following her retirement from the LPGA tour, Sharon taught golf for 13 years. I have been teaching golf for over 31 years. David Chidsey is a guitarist and educator with a broad vision of musical concepts, ideas, and teaching philosophies. David is a Carnegie Hall certified music educator and award winning composer and arranger. David earned masters degrees in both Music and Education from Columbia University. After studying music at the University of Wisconsin Colleges as an emerging performance artist and educator, David entered a college-conservatory music program at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where he studied classical guitar performance under Kevin Gallagher. Following his graduation from the conservatory, David earned a Master of Music (MM) degree in guitar performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught guitar as an assistant to Javier Calderon. Recently, David has been diligently preparing recordings and programming concerts with his guitar orchestras, including the New Jersey Guitar Orchestra, NYC Guitar Orchestra, and the United States Guitar Orchestra. David has participated in numerous prestigious music programs, such as the Aspen Summer Music School, where he studied with the famed Sharon Isbin of the Juilliard School. He also studied music and language in Vienna, Austria, with IES. Additionally, David has been involved in the Stetson International Guitar Workshop, the National Guitar Summer Workshop, and Guitare Lachine. He has taken masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Paul Galbraith, Go Nagano, Judicael Perroy, Oscar Ghiglia, LAGQ, Antigoni Goni, Jason Vieaux, Lilly Afshar, and many more. At the 2005 National Guitar Summer Workshop, David was chosen from hundreds of guitarists as one of a select few to perform for the Paul Galbraith Masterclass. In addition to his expertise in classical guitar, David is also a jazz improviser, having studied with Les Thimmig, Thomas McComb, and Jeff Erickson. He has performed for the Gunther Schuller Artist-in-Residence concert series at UW-Madison as a featured performer for the Gunther Schuller residency concert. As a music education professional, David has presented material and participated in NYSSMA state conferences, NJMEA state conferences, JEN, NAFME, ASTA, and CMA national conferences. He earned an EdM in Education from Teachers College of Columbia University under the mentorship of Professor Jacobowski. "My focus is to work with music students and scaffold their development as soloists and chamber orchestra musicians. Self-governance is a key aspect of musicianship (particularly in chamber music) that all young musicians benefit exponentially from exploring. I've been honored to study with some of the world's leading pedagogues and artists, and my vocation has become one of helping music students succeed through generative and elaborative learning techniques."
