It was such a great lesson pack-the tailored feedback really clicked for me, and the drills built my confidence, plus I’m taking away a solid plan. The coach’s communication style really encouraged me and made me feel stronger about my playing. Anticipating another lesson to sharpen my serve soon.

Coach Onur has a great way of teaching volleyball—he breaks down skills step by step and makes sure you understand both the technique and the game strategy. His training is motivating, and thanks to his guidance my performance has improved a lot.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFocus: Getting comfortable with the ball, understanding the court, and learning basic rules. • Warm-Up: Jogging, dynamic stretches, agility footwork • Skills: • Forearm passing (bump) basics • Simple toss-and-pass drills • Underhand serve introduction • Games/Activities: • Partner passing challenges • Short rallies (2v2/3v3, just keep ball over the net) • Takeaway: Comfort with ball contact & introduction to teamwork
Lesson 11+Focus: Full gameplay, offensive systems, advanced serving, and competitive strategies. • Warm-Up: Competitive ball-control challenges (e.g., “don’t let ball drop”) • Advanced Skills: • Float serves & jump serves • Offensive systems (5–1 and 6–2) • Double block coordination & reading hitters • Defensive systems (perimeter, rotational) • Team Drills: • Serve-receive rotations with full 6 players • Setter decision-making drills (who to set in game scenarios) • Transition drills (defense → attack) • Scrimmage Focus: • Full 6v6 games with real scoring • Tournament-style mini competitions • Takeaway: Players can perform in structured team play and adapt to competitive situations
Lesson 4-10Focus: Move into more game-like drills — attacking, blocking, defense, and basic team systems. • Warm-Up: Dynamic stretching, ball-control relay challenges • Skills Progression: • Lesson 4–5: Hitting approach & timing (3-step/4-step) • Lesson 6: Overhand serving & jump serve introduction • Lesson 7: Blocking basics (footwork, hand positioning) • Lesson 8: Defensive digging & floor techniques (rolls, dives) • Lesson 9–10: Serve-receive formations & setter-hitter connection • Drills: • 3-pass drill (serve, pass, set) • Attacking lines (setter toss → hitter attack) • Team defense against hits • Games/Activities: • Half-court scrimmages (4v4) with rotation • Game scenarios (e.g., must side-out to win) • Takeaway: Players transition from individual skills to team play with communication
Lesson 2-3Focus: Reinforce passing, add setting, and improve serving consistency. • Warm-Up: Ball-control warm-ups (passing circles, keep-ball-in-air game) • Skills: • Lesson 2: Overhead passing (setting) • Lesson 3: Serving consistency (underhand, intro to overhand) • Drills: • Partner setting drills • Wall practice for bump/set • Serve to target zones • Games/Activities: • Controlled 3-touch rallies (pass–set–send over) • “Target zones” serving game • Takeaway: Players begin to understand ball control and 3-touch play

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonLesson 1 – Assessment & High-Intensity Fundamentals • Warm-up (15 min): Dynamic stretches, agility ladder, short sprints, and ball-handling drills. • Skill assessment (30 min): Passing, setting, serving, and hitting reps to evaluate each player’s strengths/weaknesses. • Position-specific refresh (30 min): Fast-paced pepper drills, serve receive under pressure, and quick transition hitting. • Game-like drills (15 min): 2v2 with specific goals (e.g., first ball side out).
Lesson 11+Lesson 11+ – High-Level Competitive Training At this stage, training shifts to continuous improvement and competitive simulation. • Warm-up with ball control (10 min). • High-intensity drills (40 min): Rotational systems (5-1 or 4-2), advanced serving strategies, block-defense coordination. • Tactical scrimmage (30 min): 4v4 with real rotations, coaches giving in-game feedback. • Conditioning under pressure (10 min): Quick rallies with sprint penalties for errors to simulate fatigue. • Video analysis & reflection (optional): Review gameplay, decision-making, and strategies.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4–10 – Advanced Systems & Tactical Execution Each lesson builds intensity, with a mix of technical focus and tactical application. Core Themes: • Serving: Jump float & jump spin, serving zones, tactical serving. • Blocking & Defense: Reading hitters, swing blocking, digging against power. • Offense: Quick sets (1s, 31s, back row attacks), tempo variations, combination plays. • Decision-making: Playing out-of-system balls, recognizing defensive gaps. Sample Structure (per lesson): • Warm-up (10–15 min): Movement, serving targets. • Skill/tactical focus (30 min): e.g., blocking systems + transition attack. • Pressure drills (30 min): e.g., 2v2 with set scoring conditions, or rally scoring to 10 where errors cost double. • Game application (15–20 min): 4v4 scrimmage with tactical focus (e.g., must run a combination play every third point).
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2–3 – Serve Receive & Transition Play • Warm-up (10 min): Reaction-based movement and ball control. • Serve receive focus (30 min): Rotational serve receive patterns with pressure (e.g., 3 good passes in a row = success). • Transition drills (30 min): Hit–block–defend–counterattack sequences; quick transitions from defense to offense. • Small-sided games (20 min): 2v2 or 3v1 scenarios emphasizing serve receive and first-ball side outs.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen working with kids in volleyball, I add up my classes by building each one on top of the last. In the first sessions, I keep it simple and focus on the basics—like passing, serving underhand, and just getting comfortable handling the ball. As they start to feel more confident, I introduce setting, controlled passing, and more consistent serving. As we progress, I add in more advanced skills like hitting approaches, digging, or blocking, and eventually bring in rotations and full game play. The most important part is keeping it fun, structured, and progressive—always tying new skills back to what they’ve already learned so they feel motivated and excited to keep improving.

Working with teenagersWhen working with teenagers in volleyball, I add up my classes by challenging them with a faster progression while still reinforcing the fundamentals. I start with a review of basic skills like passing, serving, and setting to make sure the foundation is solid, then quickly move into more advanced techniques such as overhand serving, hitting approaches, and blocking. Once they have those individual skills, I introduce structured team systems like serve-receive formations, offensive plays, and defensive positioning. I also incorporate more competitive drills and full scrimmages so they can apply what they’ve learned in game-like situations. The key with teenagers is keeping practices engaging and competitive while pushing them to improve their consistency, decision-making, and teamwork, so each class builds both their individual skills and their ability to perform as a cohesive team.
