About your violin coach

My mother made me start playing violin at 3 years old. I started traditionally learning Suzuki in Buffalo, NY. I took ownership of the instrument in at 12 years old practicing after school and for cultural events. I have always taught musicians that were less skilled and would lead by example to further their understanding. With 30 years of experience, I guide students to find their own voice through the instrument. I tailor lessons to individual needs, fostering both technical mastery and a lifelong love of music.

Youth players
Working with kidsI emphasize a kindergarten approach to the new beginners. For more experienced players, I emphasize a fun/play approach that correlates to their future outlook on performance

Working with teenagersI relate to them by their perception and social construct. How they view themselves playing violin they may also seem viewed by their peers. I want them to enjoy focusing on the details and developing a voice of their own instrument

What you need to bringViolin, bow, rosin, music, shoulder rest/chin rest, no dangling jewelry, cut nails, hair not obstructing vision or performance, decent appearance

What I can bringKeyboard, originals copy of music, accompaniment music, keyboard for accompaniment practice

Lessons started before COVID and during the lockdown. Mr. Powell taught all three of my children at a very young age. He moved to N.C. We miss him and greatly appreciate him.
Ybette R
Mr. Powell was an incredible math teacher who made even the hardest problems feel possible to solve, always taking extra time after school to help me truly understand the lessons. His classroom became my escape, a place where his patient explanations and encouragement not only strengthened my math skills but also helped me cope with the challenges I’m I was facing at home.

Alexander Powell is a wonderful violin instructor—always prompt, professional, and a true pleasure to work with. Their communication is excellent, and they show genuine care for their students’ growth and well-being. Lessons are always positive, well-organized, and encouraging. Highly recommend!
Kelli Myree
We instilled Discipline, Diligence and Focus during our practice sessions at home. Alex at years of age: Mommy, when can I stop practicing. Me: When you are 35 years old.
Louddline Michel Bouzy
He is very patient, knowledgeable. He also has a good way to motivate the kids
