When coaching a beginner in shot put or discus, I focus on safety first, ensuring proper warm-ups and equipment handling. I teach the basics, like grip, stance, and the push motion for shot put or smooth release for discus. I emphasize body awareness, practicing balance and rotational movements. Strength and mobility exercises are introduced to build key muscles. I progress slowly, focusing on consistency, and give clear, positive feedback while keeping sessions fun and motivating with challenges.
In lessons 4 through 10, I focus on refining technique and building strength. We work on full throws for both shot put and discus, emphasizing timing, rhythm, and syncing movements. I introduce video analysis to help visualize form and start incorporating strength exercises for core and legs. As they progress, I shift focus to increasing distance and power, making small adjustments to technique and refining the release. I introduce more advanced drills and competition-style simulations to improve consistency under pressure. Throughout, I track progress and adjust feedback to help them build confidence and skill.
In the second and third lessons, I review the basics, correcting any mistakes and reinforcing good form. I introduce more advanced movements, like the glide for shot put and the full rotation for discus, focusing on smooth, controlled motions. I add drills for coordination and strength, then encourage them to link movements together. I allow full throws for both events, focusing on technique over distance, and start measuring progress. I give focused feedback to improve posture and release, aiming to build confidence and consistency while keeping the sessions engaging.
