In the first lesson, I focus on making the player feel comfortable on the court. We start with a warm-up and an intro to the court layout, grips, and basic swing mechanics. I usually introduce the forehand groundstroke and focus on hand-eye coordination through fun, low-pressure drills. The goal is to build confidence and get them moving.
At this stage, we refine technique and start simulating match situations. Players focus on improving shot placement, serve variety, and net play. More time is spent on point construction, mental toughness, and fitness. We tailor each lesson to the player’s growth areas and goals, whether it’s recreational play or preparing for competition.
This block focuses on consistency, control, and basic strategy. Players work on full-court rallying, serving technique, and point play. We introduce topspin, basic shot selection, and movement patterns. By the end of this phase, players should be able to keep a rally going, serve with some consistency, and understand scoring.
In these sessions, we reinforce forehand technique and introduce the backhand. Players also begin working on footwork, balance, and spacing. We’ll start rallying from short distances to help with timing and consistency. Light introduction to the serve and volleys, depending on their progress.
