About your tennis coach

Hey I’m Coach JD! Adults: New Players - Focus is strategy and footwork. This is key to winning your next match. Mid - High Players - Focus is whatever you need. Group lessons - Cardio tennis with music! Juniors/Parents: Focus is fundamentals and hustle. I love working with kids and it’s the best reward to see them improve. But I’m not the typical club coach “babysitter”. Kid staring at phone, no effort, run a lap. Fun is secondary. USTA Coaching Certificate. Experienced USTA 4.5 Player

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIt starts with footwork. If you’re not in proper position to hit the ball nothing else matters.
Lesson 11+Begin to assess and celebrate improvement with video from lesson 1 - lesson 11. Challenges: How many rally balls can you keep in play? How many serves go in out of ten? Are you comfortable with topspin and slice and volley? Can you accelerate racquet head speed and keep the ball in the court? I have specific drills to assess progress and I will provide video for you to watch and practice form at home. Such as your swing versus proper swing, or your footwork versus proper footwork.
Lesson 4-10Strategy - This is overlooked by most tennis coaches. But strategy at any level is the most important to win your next match! Serve - Trophy Stance, Ball toss, Slice serve first as it creates proper wrist pronation, then kick serve, then flat serve. I teach it this way because getting the serve “in” is the most important and best way to gain confidence. Rally - Topspin, Slice, Volley Focus will stay on footwork throughout. If the feet are not in the right place you will not hit a good shot. Most coaches focus on swing path, grip, and other mechanics. This is backwards. The feet are the most important in tennis.
Lesson 2-3Racquet grip and Proper Swing Path - forehand, backhand, volley, serve.

Youth players
Working with kidsKids 0 - 12 need to find a love for the game. This means fun! I will bring my Bluetooth speaker and play their favorite music playlist during the lesson. They will be encouraged to celebrate great shots with their favorite dance moves or high fives or whatever gets them pumped up!

Working with teenagersSimilar to Youth, but expect a bit more expectations depending on skill level. They will leave the lesson tired, exhausted, and sweating. I’ve seen too many club coaches over the years just trying to make everyone happy and comfortable. I will not do this. Show up for the lesson ready to crush balls and work on your game!

What you need to bringJust a racquet!

What I can bringPortable ball machine, lesson video, Bluetooth speaker for music, set of lines, corners, aims, high/low cones, balls and hoppers, junior and adult assortment of racquets, professional and competitive attitude.
