Learn Tennis with Jimmy

💰$31 weekly lessons

I picked up tennis as a middle schooler, played as a high schooler and enjoyed it competitively into both college (recreational) and during active duty. I continue to play, learn and tutor my children. I also had the honor of coaching elementary and middle school children as a Senior in high school. My desire to coach is in inspiring the next generation in this wonderful sport. Elaborating; my more competitive years were from 1994-1997 where I would compete across the state of Oklahoma in numerous USTA tournaments. Additionally, our high school hosted and participated in weekly matches and tournaments during the fall and spring school semesters. On a personal level, I am a Christian, husband, father, and hobbies are numerous because I’m an adventurous guy (tennis, golf, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, mountain and trail hiking, Astronomy). Professionally, I completed my Master’s Degree in 2016 & recently my PMP Certification (Project Management Professional). Additionally, I coach Jr. Flag football (6 seasons), Jr. Volleyball (1 season) & currently Little League Baseball.

⭐️During all the years of high school play, I practiced and competed against teammates who won numerous tournaments and state titles in both singles and doubles. This level of competition enabled me to develop rapidly as a player.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonA first lesson focuses on progressive learning which includes equipment and court fundamentals. After that, we move on to understanding serves, scoring, forehand, backhand, volleys, and overhead shots. Body mechanics of how to hit the ball. Controlling emotions (combatting negative thoughts and frustration). Energy management. Nutrition and sleep. External activities that develop the player as a whole such as cardiovascular activities that build endurance and strength. Coaching feedback. Developing a lesson plan.
Lesson 11+By this time, student has a deeper understanding of the game and self. These lessons focus deeper on refining specific areas of improvement.
Lesson 4-10Review lesson 1 fundamentals. Forehand, backhand, volley drills focusing on targeting. Serving. Adjusting game to doubles play.
Lesson 2-3Review of lesson 1 (to identify gaps), but move towards hitting the ball (returns (forehand, backhand, volleys)) and serves primarily as a singles player.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWork with student to understand their areas of weakness and areas they want to focus on improving. Will also use this lesson to further evaluate or assess competence in basics. Development of a future lesson plan will follow future lessons. I asses all players as a whole person. I will need the player to approach this initial lesson with humility and vulnerability. This implies have been very open conversation to identify areas outside of the game that are either helping the player or hurting the player in terms of their performance and desire.
Lesson 11+By this point, student should be in sustainment mode achieving outputs of the plan. Student should assess whether they want to continue lessons or if they require a more advanced instructor who can challenge them more.
Lesson 4-10By this lesson, it will be my objective to provide constructive feedback. This might include constructive admonishment and correction to the lesson plan developed in previous sessions. Refine the plan if need and obtain constructive feedback from student to ensure they are improving in receiving expected instruction.
Lesson 2-3In short, I will continue to work with the student on the plan that is developed from lesson one.

Youth players
Working with kidsMy lesson plan is the same for all ages, but I adjust based on where the student is at in their development. If a student is just starting out, I will scale back significantly. Coaching a younger student is only as successful as the parents’ participation to helping the student understand more and more outside of lessons.

Working with teenagersMy lesson plan is the same for all ages, but I adjust based on where the student is at in their development. If a student is just starting out, I will scale back significantly. Coaching a younger student is only as successful as the parents’ participation to helping the student understand more and more outside of lessons.

What you need to bringPersonal racket(s), hydration, appropriate clothing (for the weather), any personal medical equipment (inhalers, braces, pills, etc), sunscreen, sunglasses, sweat towels for hand & forehead), light snacks, moleskin (for hotspots on feet). Journals are encouraged (to include pen/pencil) unless students use a digital device to make notes. If students desire to record portions of their session, they can bring devices to do so. Students need to understand their learning style and bring additional items that facilitate learning. Umbrellas are encouraged to aid in cooling the body and minimizing the possibility of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

What I can bringI can provide practice balls and rackets during lessons. Some facilities provide a ball machine and normally require reservations (most require a fee per hour). If the reservation fee isn’t too excessive, I will cover the cost. An excessive fee would be more than $7/hr for example.
