If you are looking for a tennis coach who treats the sport as a craft rather than a transaction, Sean is in a league of his own. I came to Sean with a unique background: a former ping-pong champion from China, raised in Germany, with a deep appreciation for technique but zero experience on a tennis court. From our first session, Sean didn't just give me "drills"; he asked for my goals. I told him I wanted to win the very tournament I had just finished spectating as a beginner. He Values Breakthroughs Over the Clock: In an era where sports like pickleball and tennis are becoming hyper-monetized and often unaffordable, Sean is a rare breed. We trained 2–3 times a week, and if we were on the verge of a technical breakthrough, he would blow right past the hour mark. He never looks at his watch, and he never charged me for that extra time. He cares more about the "lightbulb moment" than the invoice. He immediately identified how to translate my table tennis "gifts" to the big court. He provided me with a rigorous practice outline for my solo days, ensuring every minute I spent on the court was purposeful. After just 11 months of training, I entered that tournament at the 2.5 level and won the whole thing. It felt as rewarding as any trophy from my childhood. Sean even showed up to support me during the finals. When the crowd applauded him, he refused the credit, insisting he was just there for inspiration and that I did the work. The Ultimate Compliment The best testament to Sean’s coaching? By the end of the tournament, people who refused to hit with me months ago were accusing me of being a "sandbagger." It’s an irony we still laugh about—it wasn't that I was hiding my skill; it was simply that Sean’s coaching accelerated my growth at a rate that seemed impossible to outsiders. Sean isn't just a coach; he is a world-class teammate. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned athlete looking to pivot, he will help you find your "A-game" and then some.

“Sean is great at listening to his players needs and then coaching based off that. Sean puts in the work to learn your game and will quickly find multiple points of improvement to work on. Hell then take into account what you want to personally improve on to make you a better all around player. Even within the first few lessons I could tell my game was improving. I would definitely recommend Sean. It doesnt matter where your game is at he will put in the work to make you a better player.”

“The Coaching skills are exceptional! My son went from finding Tennis practice to be a chore to now absolutely enjoying it. Now he requests to practice and looks forward to improving his tennis skills - and he is only 6.5 yrs old. This very well attests to the Coachs training ability. He has a natural flair for training kids and makes it a lot of fun for them. My son looks forward to lessons with him. I absolutely recommend Maverick Tennis for anyone interested in Tennis lessons for their kids!”

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first lesson is all about building confidence and getting you comfortable on the court. We start with a brief evaluation of your goals, followed by a 'Hand-Eye Coordination' warm-up. My primary focus is teaching the fundamentals of the ready position and the 'Unit Turn' for the forehand. By the end of the hour, you’ll be consistently rallying over the net using my 'Drop-and-Hit' drill, ensuring you leave with a solid foundation and a passion for the game.
Lesson 11+Once you’ve mastered the basics, Maverick Tennis focuses on strategy and 'Point Play.' We refine your secondary serve and introduce spin (topspin and slice) to give you more variety. Lessons become more dynamic, involving 'Live Point Simulations' where we practice match-play scenarios. My goal for you at this stage is to feel completely confident walking onto any court for a social match or local league play, equipped with the technique and tactical knowledge to compete.
Lesson 4-10During this phase, we transition from basic mechanics to movement and consistency. We’ll work on 'Footwork Patterns' and the 'Split Step' to help you reach the ball more efficiently. You’ll learn the art of the volley at the net and how to keep score for a standard match. A favorite drill here is 'King of the Court,' which introduces a fun, lighthearted competitive element while helping you handle different types of incoming shots.
Lesson 2-3In lessons 2 and 3, we expand your toolkit. We introduce the backhand and the basics of the overhead serve. I utilize the 'Shadow Swinging' technique to build muscle memory before moving into live-ball drills. For junior players, this is where we utilize USTA-standard low-compression balls to ensure proper strike-zone development. We’ll also practice 'Target Hitting,' where we aim for specific zones on the court to improve your depth and control.

Advanced training plan
Your first lesson• Assessment: Conduct a "Deep Dive" audit of current stats, video analysis, and biomechanics to identify "1% gains." • Goal Alignment: Move beyond "getting better" to specific KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) like increasing velocity by 5%, reducing unforced errors by 10%, or mastering a niche technique. • Baseline Testing: Establish high-intensity benchmarks to measure future progress.
Lesson 11+• Mental Toughness: Incorporating sports psychology, visualization, and "flow state" triggers. • Autonomous Learning: Shifting the coach's role to a consultant; the player learns to self-correct in real-time. • Periodization: Structuring training cycles to peak exactly for competitions or major milestones.
Lesson 4-10• Scenario Training: Recreating high-pressure game situations (e.g., "Down 0-40," "Final 2 minutes," or "Overtime"). • Opponent Analysis: Learning how to read cues, exploit weaknesses in others, and vary their own "tells" to remain unpredictable. • Pattern Recognition: Developing the mental speed to recognize play patterns before they fully unfold.
Lesson 2-3• Assessment: Conduct a "Deep Dive" audit of current stats, video analysis, and biomechanics to identify "1% gains." • Goal Alignment: Move beyond "getting better" to specific KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) like increasing velocity by 5%, reducing unforced errors by 10%, or mastering a niche technique. • Baseline Testing: Establish high-intensity benchmarks to measure future progress.

Youth players
Working with kidsI utilize the USTA Net Generation framework to ensure lessons are age-appropriate and engaging. For younger children, I focus on developing ABC's (Agility, Balance, and Coordination) through dynamic drills and game-based learning. I adapt my technical instruction by using modified equipment (red, orange, and green dot balls) and smaller court dimensions to ensure early success and proper stroke mechanics. My goal is to foster a love for the game while building a rock-solid technical foundation.

Working with teenagersFocus: Strategy, Mental Toughness, and Competitive Results. My approach with teenagers is centered on competitive excellence and tactical intelligence. Having coached four high schools—including taking a winless 0-10 team to a 6-4 winning season in a single year—I specialize in 'match-play readiness.' I adapt lessons by incorporating situational point-play, video analysis, and mental toughness conditioning. For elite players, I scale instruction to the national ranking level; I have mentored 2 students to Southern California national rankings and led programs to CIF playoffs by focusing on high-percentage patterns and disciplined footwork.

What you need to bringAll you need to bring is your athletic attire, water and a pair of tennis shoes!
