About your tennis coach

I am a native of Lorain, Ohio where I began my career in tennis at the age of 6. I have been a member of the United States Tennis Association since 1992 when I entered my youthful years of competition. I’ve won multiple city, county and regional tournaments as well as invites during my prime years. In 2011, I took my experience to the next level as an instructor/ coach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I gained a local reputation of being the “Go to Guy” for fitness and life changing physical regiments derived from my training in tennis. In 2015 I relocated to Louisville, Ky. where I regained momentum not only as an instructor but back in training to become a competitor competing in the 40 and over. After receiving additional certifications as Level 1 instructor with the PTR and USTA, I joined teams with Genesis Health Clubs out of Wichita Kansas, training the top Jr. Competitors in the Kentucky Southern USTA Region. At this time I am focusing on a great number of new students who are eager to be apart of the tennis community as recreational players as well as privately instructing already developed and Top competitors throughout our region.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFirst lesson will be a full assessment of your physical abilities and/hinderance covering things such as basic: Hand eye coordination Balance Left or Right handed Agility Cardio Attention span, to name a few. (Each case is different)
Lesson 11+After 11 lessons I will recommend getting a hitting partner to test out your learned skills and to go back to the beginning to fine tune each part of what you learned to become a sound recreational player. Depending on your commitment to this new lifestyle, case by case, we can assess how long it would take to become a competitor at your level.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4-10 will incorporate serving the ball as well as learning to Volley at the net, while keeping a strong focus on footwork so we don’t end up tripping ourselves. By this time, you will be comfortable with hitting the ball back and forth (Rallying) and keeping score.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2-3 we will hit a lot of tennis balls focusing on Forehand and backhand as well as fun games that simulate the absolute goal as a beginner which is to be able to Rally. (Consistently hit back and forth)

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonFor advance payers, our first lesson will entail Drills and cooperative rallying: Groundstrokes Volleys Serves Racket Control & Targeting Advanced Footwork Agility…..everything needed to show what kind of advanced player you are.
Lesson 11+After lesson 11 going forward we will warm up as match play requires. We will compete 1 set at a time straight up, no AD, first to 6 wins. Assessments made after each Set.
Lesson 4-10Lesson 4-10 we move directly to competitive game plans such as Tactics, Strategy, Offensive and Defensive approaches, followed by Best of 3 games match play.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2-3 will entail more Drills for first 25 minutes. Then 10 point tiebreakers for remainder of time, with focuses on Serve & Volley strategy.

Youth players
Working with kidsWith Kids under the age of 10 years old, it is most important to focus on Fun & Court safety. Running. Balancing and catching are the basis s of the one hour session. Kids 8 and under tend to have a shorter attention span so questions and answers will take up roughly 10 minutes of the session with water breaks taking up an additional 10-15 minutes. Smiling and laughter is vital to your child’s interest and attention staying on the court!

Working with teenagersTeenagers are a very special group of individuals, especially beginners. I encourage all my teenage beginners-advanced to ask questions at every turn. The more they ask, the more I can gauge their intent with being on the court, from there it is easier to accommodate each student individually. It is important as a Coach/Instructor/Mentor to know why a teenager wants to start tennis at such a later time in their physical and mental development. Unlearning certain habits are just as important as important (if not more) in learning new skills. It is also very important that as a coach I have a sense and understanding of their current growth as an adolescent as it tends to bare on their attention Span. Safety First.

What you need to bringRacket, Towel, water, tennis Shoes

What I can bringI provide Targets, Slinger Bag, Ball Hopper, 200-500 tennis balls, extra rackets, and bottled water.

“I started with zero experience and within 1 year of training I won my first tournament at 3.0 level”
Katarina Vresk
“After my injuries, my Dad didn’t want certain coaches apart of my recovery because of how serious the recovery was going to be. Coach Farris introduced himself to me and my Dad one day and respectfully asked on 3 separate occasions if he could be my trainer. At first my Dad said no but later, Coach Farris promised positive results at a pace that was consistent with careful planning, training and discipline. At one point I was one of the best Jr. Prospects in The nation, I know how good I can be and Coach Farris has been a huge part of my confidence level”
Timmy Gay
I just like the fact that Coach has his own court and it’s one of the best surfaced ones in the city!!!!!
Debra Sistrunk
“I am one of the best players on my team at school, and Coach keeps saying I can be one of the best in the city if I control my emotions. He’s right and I’m On my way!”
Ariana Figge
“I take lessons with Coach Farris In the morning before school and it really helps me to get my day going in the right direction. I was very nervous the first 3 or 4 times, but Coach Farris really has taught me how I can relate tennis to so many different areas of my life at home, school and even on my Basketball team!”
Timmy Gay
“I am a semi-pro football player with tennis not having much to do with my area, however Coach Farris has proved how disciplined one can become in other areas of sports with his training regimens that have so much variety. His innovations with cross training was evident when we went on tour in South Florida twice to Sara Vandeburge Tennis and wellness Center in Zepherhills, Florida where we trained with the #1 Jr. Player in the state. This guy knows what he is doing!”
