Maurice is a dedicated and enthusiastic tennis coach in Decatur, bringing over 15 years of playing experience and more than three years of teaching expertise. With a strong foundation in individual, doubles, and group instruction, Maurice is committed to developing well-rounded tennis players of all ages and skill levels. His coaching background includes serving as a summer instructor at Morehouse College, where he organized practices, led matches, and guided students to improve their skills. As a former Morehouse College player and ALTA Champion, Maurice embodies leadership, self-discipline, and sportsmanship, inspiring younger athletes to reach their potential. He offers engaging private, semi-private, group lessons, and hitting sessions, tailored to help students master everything from technique to singles and doubles strategy. Maurice is available for lessons in the Decatur area and will travel up to 15 miles.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn our first lesson, we start with a warm-up and a brief discussion of your goals. I assess your grip, stance, swing mechanics, and footwork. We focus on basic forehand and backhand fundamentals, rally consistency, and an introduction to serve technique. You receive immediate feedback and tips for improvement, setting the foundation for future sessions. This session is designed to build confidence, identify strengths and weaknesses, and create a personalized plan to guide your progress.
Lesson 11+From the eleventh lesson onward, training becomes highly individualized. We focus on advanced shot execution under pressure, tactical point construction, and mental resilience. Sessions involve situational drills, live match simulations, and fine-tuning of your serve and return strategies. The aim is to refine your game for competitive play, address specific weaknesses, and further develop your unique playing style. This phase ensures continuous growth and peak performance in matches.
Lesson 4-10These sessions concentrate on enhancing power, accuracy, and strategic play. We work on advanced footwork, shot selection, and incorporating spin to add variety to your game. Drills include simulated match play, rally consistency exercises, and situational tactics to adapt to different opponents. Conditioning exercises improve endurance, while targeted practice sharpens net play and volley skills. This period is all about turning solid fundamentals into a competitive edge on the court.
Lesson 2-3In lessons two and three, we reinforce proper stroke mechanics and work on shot consistency. We practice improved footwork, transition from baseline to net, and basic point construction. Drills focus on refining your serve and return, along with introducing spin variations like topspin and slice. These sessions build on your initial skills and prepare you for more competitive play by emphasizing control, accuracy, and movement efficiency.
