About your tennis coach

Hello my name is Allen and I am a local Milwaukee tennis coach with over 40 years of playing experience and over 11 years of teaching experience! After I retired as a Senior Graphic Designer in 2009, I turned my attention to another life-long passion, tennis! Since then, I have earned three gold as well as five silver medals in tennis while participating in the Senior Olympics. I have also been a boys and girls tennis coach at Brookfield Central High School since 2013 and served as the head tennis coach for Mount Mary University located in Milwaukee (NCAA Division 3) in 2016. I am currently employed as a tennis instructor for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Tennis is great fun! It’s a lifetime sport that brings many rich benefits. Learning to play tennis well brings a sense of fulfillment and self-confidence. I am offering fun private tennis lessons, semi-private tennis lessons, group tennis lessons and hitting only sessions for all ages (kids, teens, adults, seniors) and for all skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). So whether you need to work on some specifics like your forehand, backhand, volley, serve, service return, overhead, drop shot, approach shot, footwork, singles strategy or doubles strategy-I would be more than happy to help you out with your tennis game!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI’ll show beginning students basic warmup stretches, how to grip their racket, and tennis footwork. I normally devote the first lesson to learning to hit volleys. I use progressive drills with shadow swings, ball drops, and across the net feeds. It’s the fastest and easiest way to learn.
Lesson 11+By now students have shown they want to advance. They usually have a competitive nature. Mental toughness in tennis is unique, different from other sports. Learning how to compete under pressure and adversity separates the good from the best. I usually introduce these principles along the way if I recognize these traits in the student. But it’s not for everyone.
Lesson 4-10Additional lessons will be spent rounding out their skills to be more competent using the most common tennis shots; the overhead, drop shots, approaching the net, producing top spins, slice shots, etc. Students come to me with different goals. Some will want to learn scoring systems, tactics and strategies. Others want to just have fun with their family and friends hitting the ball over the net. It’s important to keep tennis fun for everyone.
Lesson 2-3I normally spend the second lesson on learning to hit ground strokes with progressive drills. I show them the correct grips, the check points to their body positions, weight transfer, etc. The third lesson usually is devoted to the serve. I use much the same approach as learning the volley and ground strokes in lessons one and two. These three lessons will enable students to become fundamentally proficient to enjoy playing points either with me or friends.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonI first listen to the needs of advanced students to set lesson plans. At 78 years old, I am not likely their best hitting partner. But I have a portable ball machine which enables me to stand near my advanced students. This allows me to focus my entire attention on the student from the ready position to the follow through, just like the pros. I can offer immediate feedback. Whereas, if I feed balls to my students from across the net I miss their set up.

Youth players
Working with kidsThe key to teach tennis to children is to keep it fun. Lots of laughter is a good thing. Some silliness is ok unless it becomes excessive. I normally begin by accessing their skill levels with hand-eye coordination and footwork drills even before using the racket. I progress at their pace. Moving too quickly past their competency level frustrates them and they don’t want to continue. I may use startup balls for certain drills.

What you need to bringPlease bring your racket, good fitting athletic shoes, sunscreen, and lots of water.

What I can bringI will supply balls, a portable ball machine, when student are ready to use it. However, I don’t have extra rackets at this time.
