I’d say the lesson with Allen was quite good, mainly because he’s very patient and thorough, which I appreciate. Still, I think more practice of the basics could help me build a stronger foundation.

I take lessons from Allen and I can tell you this: he has the focus, knowledge and skills to motivate you to the next level. Don't just take lessons from someone that teaches at the local club and doesn't have long experience. Allen has played Division 1A and knows how the game as changed over the past 25 years. Trust me, you will be very happy you chose him for your tennis instruction and/or training. He will probably get booked up if you don't act soon and get yourself into his schedule."

"Allen is an absolute pleasure to work with. After only a few sessions, I was already able to see a dramatic improvement in my strokes. He is able to identify what you're doing wrong, and give tips on how to fix it. He's a positive person, and gives great feedback in an encouraging way. Also, he's not cheap with her time, and takes the extra time to talk you through things and continue to work on specific problem areas at the end of the lesson. Very highly recommended!"
Jack K., Coral Gables, FL.
"Allen is a genius! His patient approach helped me to change to a forehand grip after playing for 50 years with a continental grip. I'm 65 years old (with 2 knee replacements) and don't handle changes easily. Coach suggested we change my grip to semi-western in order to improve my forehand. It was frustrating at first, but I've already gotten rid of my arm band for my tennis elbow and I'm having more fun than ever playing tennis. Thank you so much!"

"We're so lucky to have found Coach Allen! Our five kids have a weekly clinic with him. They love him and can't wait to start their lessons. He provides one-on-one time with each student while the others are practicing drills. He controls the lessons with patience, firmness and good humor and the kids happily follow his instructions. He's a former Middle/High school teacher and knows how to handle groups to keep them engaged."
Oscar G., Wake Forest, N.C.
"Coach Allen is a great coach!" I've been taking lessons from him for the past year, starting as a beginner. I now compete in 3.5 USTA leagues and am looking forward to moving up to 4.0 in the near future. I think the reason that I've learned the game so fast is that he always seems to find the area to work on that will improve my game the most."

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonAfter laying out the ground rules such as safety and encouraging them to ask questions, I look at their coordination - both physical and hand-eye - balance and mobility. For the next 30 minutes I begin to teach them the forehand by first demonstrating it several times so they can see what it looks like. I then move to the process of teaching them the correct body mechanics, swing path and contact point. We end the lesson by teaching them how to toss, in order to prepare them for learning to serve, emphasizing the need to practice enough so they can begin to gain control over the toss. We end with going over the key takeaways from the lesson and showing them how to practice.
Lesson 11+We'll begin to play points, going over what they did well and what they needed to correct, in terms of shot selection and execution. As we continue to refine our techniques and tactics, we'll begin to move from a baseline style of play to moving forward to the midcourt and forecourt to enable them to finish points more quickly. This involves implementing new kinds of tactics such as heading approach shots and coming into the net, establishing a volley position and finishing the point. Later lessons become less involved in technique and more involved in problem-solving, creating and executing winning patterns of play and the important mental aspects of the game to make them into a complete player.
Lesson 4-10Subsequent lessons involve continuing the process of teaching strokes (backhand, serve return, volley and overhead, with a particular emphasis on serving. At the same time, I will teach them how to develop a strategy and the tactics, shot selection and court positioning required to execute the strategy. This involves helping them to develop their "Tennis IQ" and creating patterns of shots they can use to implement their tactics.
Lesson 2-3We continue working on their forehand technique, emphasizing important aspects of the stroke, such as relaxation, watching the ball, swinging with full extension by rotating their body rather than just with their arm. I then move on drop-hits and then short feeding. I'll also check in on their toss and if acceptable, I'll begin to teach them how to coordinate tossing the ball and hitting it.

Youth players
Working with kidsI am certified by the USTA in teaching 10 and under students. The whole key to teaching kids is to make it fun. We play games and at the same time, work on physical skills such as hand-eye, coordination, balance and mobility, as well as using them to teach basic strokes.

Working with teenagersOnce again, the key with teenagers is to keep them engaged and having fun by using games to teach strokes and making learning their tennis drills competitive.

What you need to bringGood tennis shoes, your racquet, some water and an eagerness to learn!

What I can bringI provide tennis balls and racquet loaners for juniors and adults. I also offer grip overwraps.
