About your tennis coach

Hi, my name is Aaron. Tennis has been a lifelong passion of mine. Growing up in Northern Virginia, I started playing when I was just four years old. By the time I was a teenager, I was ranked Top 5 in Virginia for my age group (15–18) and finished as a Top 20 junior in the Mid-Atlantic region, competing in national tournaments across the country. Along the way, I trained with some of the best coaches in the U.S., including a mentor who also worked with Frances Tiafoe during his junior development at College Park. In 2018, I moved to California to play collegiate tennis at California Lutheran University (CLU), where I competed for four years and served as team captain my senior year, reaching an 11 UTR. Off the court, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business and Sports Management, and I recently completed my MBA. I’ve been coaching part- and full-time since 2021, working with players of all ages and skill levels. My goal as a coach is to make the game enjoyable, while helping players build strong fundamentals, improve strategy, and develop confidence on the court. Whether you’re a beginner picking up a racquet for the first time or an experienced player aiming to sharpen your edge, I’m excited to help you take your game to the next level!

Wow, that lesson with Aaron was sharp, and the focus on footwork clicked for me, especially the quick bursts between shots. The highlight, Good, felt earned as I gained tempo and confidence, and I’m already curious to build on this progress. A gentle nudge for future improvement would be keeping up the consistency in follow-through, but I’m optimistic about the next session. Looking forward to more, and yes, I’ll book again soon.

The lesson kicked off with warmth and focus, and Aaron’s kindness made practice feel effortless, not rushed. A gentle nudge to clarify rules next time, then I’m ready to push ahead.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIntroduction to tennis: rules, scoring, and equipment basics • Grip and stance fundamentals (forehand & backhand) • Simple short court rally drills, then try rallying from baseline • Serve toss basics (focus on consistency, not power)
Lesson 11+• Live point play with coaching between rallies • Focus on constructing points: serve + first shot patterns • Introduce spin (topspin forehand, slice backhand) at a comfortable pace • Approach shots & net play (coming forward with control) • Match simulation: applying skills in tiebreaks and short-set formats • Emphasis on sportsmanship, confidence, and competitive readiness
Lesson 4-10 • Groundstroke accuracy drills (forehand crosscourt, backhand down-the-line) • Introduction to volleys (forehand & backhand at the net) • Serve practice (placement into deuce/ad court targets) • Rally progression: cooperative rally → competitive rally • Simple tactics: keeping the ball deep, hitting to open space
Lesson 2-3• Refine forehand and backhand swings (emphasizing contact point & follow-through) • Introduce consistent serving motion with focus on rhythm • Footwork basics: split step, recovery, and positioning on the court • Mini-rally games to encourage controlled rallies

Advanced training plan
Your first lesson • Evaluate current skill set through live hitting and point play • Refine fundamentals: footwork, timing, and stroke efficiency • Serve & return assessment with focus on consistency under pressure • Identify individual strengths/weaknesses to customize progression
Lesson 11+ • Structured match play with in-game coaching feedback • Developing point construction for high-percentage play • Match analysis: reviewing video clips to refine shot selection and decision-making • Mental toughness training: routines, visualization, and managing momentum shifts • Tournament preparation: warm-up routines, recovery strategies, and tactical adjustments against varied opponents
Lesson 4-10• Singles strategy: court positioning, patterns of play, exploiting opponent weaknesses • Doubles strategy: poaching, signals, positioning, and communication • Advanced rally drills: depth + directional control under pace • Return-of-serve strategy (neutralizing first serves, attacking second serves) • Match-play scenarios: tie-breakers, pressure drills, fitness integration • Emphasis on mental resilience during competitive drills
Lesson 2-3• Topspin (kick) and slice serves (focus on spin variety and placement) • Aggressive volleys and overheads (approach + finishing drills) • Drop shots, lobs, and transition play • Situational shot selection: when to attack vs. when to defend

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen teaching kids, I make lessons fun, active, and engaging by using games and creative drills that keep their attention and energy high. My focus is on building a strong foundation in the basics, grips, footwork, and strokes, while making sure learning feels like play. I use encouragement, patience, and positive reinforcement so kids feel confident and excited to step on the court. The goal is for every child to leave smiling, learning, and eager to come back.

Working with teenagersWhen coaching teenagers, I adapt my lessons to balance skill development with competition, fitness, and strategy. At this age, players want to be challenged, so I incorporate advanced drills, match play, and point construction while also teaching them how to think tactically on the court. I create a supportive and collaborative environment where teens push each other, learn teamwork, and build confidence. By combining physical training with mental toughness skills, I help prepare them for competitive play and continued growth in the sport.

What you need to bringTennis shoes, racket, hat, water 👍

What I can bringBasket of balls, cones. Can bring an extra racket if needed. For hitting lessons for higher level players I'll bring a can or two of balls.
