As an avid surfer with 20 years of experience riding the ocean, I've honed my skills as an amateur surfer and love guiding others as they progress. Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWater safety, water balance, and basic movements from paddling to popping up, will be par for the course for all beginners. This lesson will mostly consist of getting you confident with the movements and end with me pushing you into a some small waves to practice what we learned 🏄
Lesson 2-3Hopefully by the second and third lesson, the movements will feel fluid enough that you will be able to stand on the board and ride your wave without falling for some time. Like anything else, experience builds competence and I am confident you will have the ability to ride the ocean at this point 🤙
Lesson 4-10This is where the excitement really starts to build. Here, my aim is to have you truly riding the wave and not just surfing the whitewash (both are surfing in my book but the latter is less rewarding). This will involve learning positioning, picking your waves, committing to the paddle, and maneuvering your board while riding! This is where surfing really starts to capture your heart and mind. I guarantee you will be hooked by your first board slide 🌊
Lesson 11+At this point we can move on to more intermediate skills: carving, long/short boards tricks, and/or bigger waves, whichever you prefer, but my hope is by lesson 10, at the most, you will not longer need me 😁
Youth players
Working with kidsWorking at summer camps as a water ski instructor and lifeguard, I have experience teaching children water sports. For kids, it is very important to choose equipment and surf conditions that are suitable not only for their age but their skill level and water competency. Just as important though, is making them feel secure and confident throughout the lesson. Therefore it is key that the parent or guardian work with me to tailor the lesson for their child(ren).
Working with teenagersTeens want to feel guided without being stifled. It takes a gentle but steady grip to guide them between the pitfalls of control and ambivalence. I promise to ensure they feel heard and independent while still ensuring water safety education and basic surf competency!
What you need to bringIf you have a surfboard that you’d like to learn on, I’d encourage you to bring those to build familiarity with your board!
Otherwise, I do have some equipment you can use, but I’ll need you to reach out to see if they’d be the right fit for you.
What I can bringI have two soft top long boards and one large volume fiberglass short board that you can use!
