I use the first lesson as a conversational assessment to understand the student’s current level, strengths, and areas for improvement. I ask open-ended questions about their experiences, interests, and opinions to evaluate their vocabulary, fluency, grammar, and ability to communicate naturally. Based on this assessment, I identify specific areas that need reinforcement and use them to create a personalized learning plan. For example, if a student is comfortable with the present tense but struggles with past tenses, we may focus on the preterite and imperfect and practice using them in meaningful conversations.
By the second and third lessons, I begin implementing a personalized learning plan based on the needs identified during the first lesson. The focus may include strengthening grammar, improving vocabulary, refining pronunciation, or developing fluency. For example, if verb conjugation is an area of weakness, we may review pronoun patterns and irregular verbs through guided practice and conversation. Each lesson is adapted to the student’s specific goals and areas for improvement.
By lessons 4–10, advanced students should begin to feel more comfortable and confident using Spanish in conversation. The focus is on reinforcing the structures and skills introduced in the earlier lessons so students can use them more naturally and accurately. Through repetition, guided conversation, and targeted practice, students gradually improve their fluency and become more comfortable using verbs correctly in different contexts. I believe in building a strong foundation before moving on to more complex structures, allowing students to master each step before progressing.
From lesson 11 onward, advanced students begin applying what they have learned in both spoken and written Spanish. I may introduce short writing assignments, such as writing a paragraph about their daily routine, weekend, or personal experiences, using the vocabulary and verb structures they have learned. We then review their writing together and use it to strengthen grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. The goal is for students to become increasingly confident expressing their ideas naturally, both in conversation and in writing.
