About your soccer coach

COACHING EXPERIENCE: I have experience coaching boys and girls ranging from 4-40 years old. I was a coach in San Francisco for an organization called SF Glens FC, and then I started coaching private lessons in Orange County after playing college soccer at BIOLA University. I also coached a girls Chealsea OC soccer club in Orange County Southern California in 2024. But my passion is being a private coach, which I have been for 5 years now. I love watching people progress quickly and seeing their confidence boost as a result of it. ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS: I played 4 years of collegiate soccer on scholarship. I played 1 year at Academy of Art University from 2014-2015, and I played 3 years at Biola University from 2015-2017. Post Collegiate Recognition: 2018 I was offered to play PDL (Semi-pro) for the So Cal Seahorses which I turned down because at the time I was also speaking with USL (Professional) coaches who said I was good enough for professional level. I tore my ACL prior to going pro, and since recovering I found a passion for coaching. College Awards/Accomplishments: Biola University 2017 • NCCAA All-American second team selection • Named to the All-PacWest second team • Named PacWest Defender of the Week on Oct. 2 • Appeared in 17 matches, starting 16 times • Scored four goals, including three game-winners - Biola's 4th Leading scorer my last year 2017 while playing as a Center Back. - Team voted MVP for Biola Men's Soccer Team my last year in 2017. • Played 1,562 minutes as the Eagles' leading centreback Biola University 2015-2016 • Earned All-Conference 1st Team honors in 2016 at Biola • Led the team with 1,581 total minutes • Played in all 17 of the Eagles' matches, earning starts in all 17 • Scored two goals, including the game-winner against Hope International • Had three assists to push his point total to seven (fourth on the team) ACADEMY OF ART • Player one season for the knights, logging the most minutes played among his freshman class • Appeared in 18 matches HIGH SCHOOL • Two-time Freeway League Best Defensive Player • Prepped four varsity seasons at Fullerton Union HS, graduating in 2014 • Named to All-CIF first team in 2014 • Also ran track at Fullerton Union, medaling in the 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, 400m, and High Jump • Earned a club national championship in 2013 with West Coast FC Premier Club Accomplishments: - West Coast FC, 2013 U18 National Champions Overland Park - West Coast FC, 2014 U18 National Championship 3rd Place

My 11-year-old son has been training with coach Sam for two years. I have seen him improve little by little and he is currently playing for the EA team. Unfortunately, Sam has moved away from California and my son misses him very much. I wish you all the best in MD and can help more children who play soccer.

Sammy is an exceptional soccer coach! I brought him on to help develop soccer programs for our sports training platform, covering youth through professional levels—and his expertise was evident from day one. Working with both younger athletes and seasoned pros, Sammy demonstrated a strong ability to break down highly technical movements. Even when athletes struggled, he quickly identified the issue and provided clear, effective cues to correct it. What stood out most was his presence, patience, and genuine passion throughout every session. His coaching isn’t just skilled—it’s thoughtful and intentional. I highly recommend Sammy to anyone looking to elevate their soccer training.

I’ve worked with Coach McKay in the past and can confidently say he’s one of the most passionate and knowledgeable private soccer coaches out there. He focuses not only on technical skills and fitness but also helps build confidence and game IQ. His sessions are always well-structured, high-energy, and tailored to each player’s needs. Whether you’re just starting or trying to take your game to the next level, he genuinely cares about helping you grow.

My daughter (15yrs old ) and a beginner was comfortable with Coach Samuel. From what I observed ,he understands how to communicate to his client, not just verbally but he will demo it and explain it's purpose in the game ,in addition to his personal demeanor that helped my daughter to receive the instruction and process it . My daughter left our first session feeling and knowing she left with something more than she came with . Thanks Coach Samuel

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first lesson is typically a broad overview (assuming you're wanting multiple lessons), so I can get a good idea of the athletes skill in every important area in soccer. Firstly, I ask what you're looking to accomplish, and tailor the 1st session with an aim of helping a decent amount with that goal. But also incorporating a wide variety of drills. This will depend upon the skill level, but will include passing, shooting, dribbling, 1v1, juggling, skill moves, etc.
Lesson 11+11+ is for people who are truly invested in improving. At this point and beyond, we delve into not just 1 or 2 skills, but all of them, how they intersect, how and when to use them, and how to translate them into the real game. This is where I see athletes become masters of their own skills over time. This is why I coach, so that I can witness athletes develop to a point where they no longer need me, because the lessons and skills are so ingrained that they become their own coach.
Lesson 4-10This is where you really start noticing dramatic improvements. We focus on the advanced forms of what we covered in days 1-3. We take those fundamentals learned (and fundamentals does not mean "easy" in any way), and we build upon them and refine them to be 2nd nature, muscle memory. After this point, you will have gained considerable improvements in at least a couple areas, if not more.
Lesson 2-3This will be where we first start focusing more on a single skill or a couple at a time in each lesson. This is where most of the progress will just start taking shape. I focus on whatever I've evaluated (and what the athlete or parent decides) is the most important skill to improve upon. And address any further ones in lesson 4-10.

Advanced training plan
Your first lesson1st I ask what you want to accomplish with private lessons. From there, I do focus on that in the 1st lesson, but I always encourage the athlete to allow me to do a broad overview for the 1st training so I can identify the strengths and areas needing improvement. This will be the foundation for the future lessons. I can teach you whatever you'd like to learn, and act as a high level competitor. 1. Fundamental forms for dribbling, passing, skill moves, shooting, defending, etc. This can be quick if they're advanced or take multiple lessons if they're not advanced. 2. Drills geared towards the athletes goals. 3. 1v1 scenarios and game like scenarios
Lesson 11+For advanced athletes, after 10 lessons, we continue with the "broadening phase" in that we cover a wide variety of skills. However, now they become more specific into each of those broader skills. Meaning, within each category, take skill moved for instance, there are many particular moves you could master. We could have a lesson geared just towards fake shots because there's many ways to use them, many ways to make the fake, and takes a while to master and make it believe able. This is what I mean by a specific focus within the broad all encompassing skills of soccer.
Lesson 4-10This is where you start mastering a particular focus if you have one. Or it is where we start delving into a variety of different skills, and see how they connect, how to think like a pro, how to do the little things that professional players do. Once again, there's no plan, but typically this is a broadening phase of the path, where we go beyond the 1 or 2 goals the athlete has and expand their horizons and skill set to be more well rounded.
Lesson 2-3This is where we hone in on repetition for the particular goal the athlete set out to accomplish. You will begin to see decent improvements and will learn how to see your success and errors on your own more easily after these sessions. I don't have a planned activity list, because it literally changes based on everyone I coach.

What you need to bring1. Cleats 2. Water

What I can bring1. Goal 2. Pug goals 3. Balls 4. Cones 5. Ladder 6. An active competitor scaled to whatever level is most helpful (myself)
