Jason Lyons has been an incredible soccer trainer for my son, and we couldn’t be happier with his progress. We have done over 15 lessons with Jason. Beginner training plan
Your first lessonA typical hour long session would consist of an introduction come myself and learning about my clients interests, how long they have been on playing soccer, and what they want to get out of the coaching sessions. I would be looking to get a feel for what the client is like, how they respond to certain drills, and what pace the client likes in terms of how fast we are moving from drill to drill. I want to adapt as quickly as possible to the clients skill level, so the first session would be really focusing on understanding their baseline skills and knowledge of the game.
Lesson 2-3-A light warm up (10 minutes) that includes speed and agility, and technical work related to the topic of the session.
-Three 15 minute blocks of various technical and tactical activities. These often included position specific drills (defender, midfielder, attacker) as well as drills designed to improve the basic technical ability necessary for players to improve in all facets of the game.
- 5 minute cool down and debrief, talking about how the player has been doing with their club/school team, and how I can continue to plan sessions that will optimize the players potential.
Youth players
Working with kidsThe biggest thing I focus on when working with kids in maintaining engagement. Making the drills fun, using various games and characters that a particular kid likes is always important to maintaining engagement. For example, if a kid really likes cars, I may have him/her do a dribbling game in which we imagine we are both race cars, and we are racing through an array of cones. Not only does this keep them engaged, but we are still working on fundamental dribbling techniques as well.
Working with teenagersI adapt my lessons to teenagers by asking genuinely what they are wanting to get out of the lessons. Connecting with the teen, building trust with them by letting them know that their input is valued in terms of how I run the sessions. Are they looking to be challenged? Is a more laid back style of coaching necessary? These are the things I seek to learn when it comes to coaching teens.
