About your soccer coach

With more than two decades of soccer passion and experience, I create a fun, supportive environment where players of all levels can thrive. As a former college player at Maryville University and college coach at UHSP, I bring both high-level playing experience and proven coaching strategies to every session. I currently run a college sports recruiting company (CSR - College Sport Recruiter) dedicated to helping student-athletes get recruited and play soccer at the next level. I also previously served as the Manager of Soccer Operations at TOCA Soccer STL, where I led a team of high-intensity trainers focused on elite player development. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming for college soccer, I’m here to help you unlock your full potential and love the game even more.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn the first session, I focus on making it fun, relaxed, and confidence-building. We’ll start with simple warmups and ball touches to get comfortable. Then we’ll play some basic dribbling games, do a few light passes, and end with a small shooting activity. The main goal? Get moving, have fun, and leave with a smile. No pressure - just play.
Lesson 11+This is where it all starts to come together. Players will be more confident with the ball, and we’ll begin: • Playing more realistic game situations • Combining multiple skills in one drill (dribble + pass + shoot) • Talking through basic tactics and decision-making The goal is to help each player feel ready to jump into a recreational or competitive team with confidence, and to still love every minute of training.
Lesson 4-10Now we’re layering in more control and awareness. Expect drills that focus on: • Shooting technique (both power and accuracy) • Defensive positioning • Movement off the ball • Simple game understanding We’ll still play fun games, but these lessons help build real soccer IQ in a low-pressure environment. I’ll also start giving simple “home practice” ideas to reinforce skills.
Lesson 2-3In Lessons 2 and 3, we begin building basic technique. We’ll work on: • Dribbling with control (inside/outside foot) • Passing with both feet • Stopping and turning the ball Each session includes fun games and challenges to keep things engaging. We’ll also introduce a little friendly competition with 1v1 or obstacle-style drills.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonFor advanced players, the first session is all about evaluation and getting a feel for their current level. We’ll go through a variety of technical drills (touches, passing, shooting) and small-sided challenges to assess strengths and areas to improve. I’ll also talk with them about their goals - whether it’s club tryouts, high school soccer, or college recruiting, so we can tailor the sessions to fit their needs.
Lesson 11+We go all in on elite development. These sessions focus on: • Refining details - movement off the ball, timing, deception • Perfecting technique at match tempo • Leadership skills, mindset, and situational awareness Everything is game-focused and tied to individual goals. If a player is aiming for college recruitment, I’ll help create highlight footage and guide them on what scouts are looking for.
Lesson 4-10Here’s where we push performance. Sessions will include: • High-intensity conditioning with the ball • Tactical drills (pressing, transitions, positional awareness) • Match-like scenarios with added pressure (limited time, tight space, scoring targets) • Repetitions to increase speed of play and confidence under stress I’ll also work on mental toughness, leadership, and communication if the player is preparing for a higher level.
Lesson 2-3These sessions dive right into advanced ball mastery and decision-making under pressure. Expect: • High-rep technical drills (first touch, combination play, weak foot work) • Advanced dribbling patterns and attacking footwork • Game-speed 1v1 scenarios We’ll start breaking down game examples and introduce position-specific work based on the player’s role.

Youth players
Working with kidsWhen I work with kids, the number one goal is to make it fun! Everything we do is built around games, imagination, and movement. We turn drills into challenges, races, or mini-adventures so they stay excited and engaged. While they’re having fun, they’re also learning the basics - dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork, without even realizing they’re training. I always keep things positive, encouraging, and age-appropriate to help build their confidence and love for the game from day one.

Working with teenagersWith teenagers, I focus on creating a positive, energetic environment where they can push themselves, grow their skills, and still have fun. At this stage, most players want to improve and compete, so I design sessions that are challenging but rewarding - mixing technical drills, small-sided games, and game-like scenarios. I also make sure to connect with them on a personal level, keeping things upbeat and supportive while encouraging accountability and confidence. Whether they’re playing for fun or chasing a bigger goal like high school or college soccer, I meet them where they’re at and help them take the next step.

What you need to bringWater bottle

What I can bringI’ll bring everything we need for the training session - no need for you to bring anything. I’ll have the soccer balls, nets, cones, and all the equipment ready to go.

Coach Gus helped me take my game to the next level. We worked on first touch, vision, and quicker decision making. He used drills that actually translate to real games, and he gave me confidence going into my club season. Great coach, even better mentor.
Ava
I’ve trained with a few coaches before but Coach Gus stands out. He really listens to what I want to work on and builds each session around my goals. We’ve been focusing on agility, 1v1 attacking, and college prep. I feel way more prepared for upcoming showcase tournaments now.
Noah
I started training with Coach Gus right before my high school tryouts and ended up making the team. He helped me clean up my technique and showed me how to position myself better on the field. Every session is high energy and focused. Definitely recommend him if you’re serious about improving your game.
Lily
Coach Gus is the best! I used to be nervous on the field, but now I feel way more confident. He always makes our training fun and teaches me things in a way that’s easy to understand. I’ve already improved my footwork and learned how to pass better with both feet!
Jackson
I like working with Coach Gus because he helps me get better at things I used to struggle with. My shooting has improved a lot and now I’m starting to play midfield instead of just defense. He’s cool and keeps practice fun while still pushing me to get better.
