We will begin by getting to know each other and discussing your singing goals. I will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about me before we proceed so that we can determine whether or not we will be a good fit. You will get a general overview of my approach to teaching singing and then we will conclude with some breathing and vocalization exercises
Once we have begun learning songs, we will also start working on turning you from a singer into a performer by working on your diction and interpretation of the music, getting you comfortable with using your face and your body to convey emotion while you’re singing so that you can perform with nuance and artistry
As the lessons progress, you may wish to start using some of the pieces you have learned for auditions or a recital. At that time, we will also start incorporating some instruction into the lessons that goes beyond singing, like tips for auditioning and ways to improve your stage presence and connect with your audience
By lesson 4, we can start working on some repertoire if we have’t already. So the lesson will follow the same basic structure, but in addition to the usual vocal warmups and instruction, we will sing through a piece or two so that we can apply the instruction to some actual repertoire
Everyone learns differently and I believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher to customize their lessons so that the teaching method is tailored to each student individually. So if you are a visual learner, we can incorporate visualization techniques to help you to understand the concepts being introduced. If you prefer a more literal approach, we can keep the focus more on anatomy and using more precise, technical terms. We can also use a combination of both, which I think is most beneficial for most people
The lessons will be generally structured as follows:
• Catch up: We will discuss what you have been working on since the previous lesson and we will talk about your singing goals moving forward or whatever you feel like talking about
• Warm-up: We will begin by warming up the body with some light movement and stretching and then we will warm up the voice with a few vocal exercises
• Instruction: We will spend time with each lesson discussing anatomy and the mechanics of the voice so that you understand what you are asking your body to do with each exercise
• In addition to vocalizing, will work on breathing techniques so that you learn how to support your sound
• Wrap-up: The lesson will conclude with a review of what was covered and an opportunity for you to provide feedback and answer questions. During this time, we can also discuss what what you would like to work on moving forward and if there is anything in particular that I would like you to work on, I may assign you some specific exercises that I would like you to do. We can also handle payment and setting up our next lesson at this time
