About your singing coach

From attending Trevecca Nazarene University, I learned a lot about the different parts of the music industry, such as performance, audio tech, music business, music theory and music history. These different studies have helped me grow in my musical taste, talent and knowledge. I know that whatever job I end up in, I can use what I have learned and apply it to any part of the music world. Music has always been my passion, as I am part of a musical family and have sung since I was 2 years old. I am currently pursuing my music career as a singer/songwriter in the Nashville community.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI first start by asking how much experience they’ve had singing. Then we go into their favorite genres and what they like to sing. I do some warm up scales to find out your vocal range!
Lesson 11+We are warming up but really focusing on the song/s they’ve chosen and cleaning up small things. They know the words to the songs and are just applying the techniques to perfect the songs.
Lesson 4-10After we’ve warmed up and done our different vocal sounds, the student is ready to use those techniques in the songs they choose. We start by learning the song on a vowel before we use words. This helps me hear breath support and if the student is hitting the correct notes.
Lesson 2-3We do basic vocal warm ups like lip trills and other vowel sounds that open up the vocal folds. The focus is on finding your breath and using the correct mouth shape to get the right sound. We start to pick a song but not really dive in yet.
Youth players
Working with kidsWith kids, I try to simplify the process by playing the notes and having them sing them back to me. It’s more about having fun with the song then getting everything right! Over time we focus on pitch and staying on rhythm.
Working with teenagersMost have worked with or at least sang music at some point. I use what they know about music and try to relate to their experiences while incorporating new techniques. We go into different genres of music and music theory so that they can even learn music on their own!

She is a great singing coach. Katy taught me the basics of everything I needed to know about singing like breathing through your diaphragm and projection. I found the singing exercises we did also very helpful. I liked how she put a lot of effort into helping me with any trouble that I had with my singing. Overall, she was a kind, patient, and dedicated singing Coach.
