Dr. James Lent has the Doctor of Musical Arts defeee from Yale and teaches musical theatre styles at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) and at UCLA where he is more involved in Classical Music. He is certified in Andrew Byrne’s Singing Athlete Method which is a brain based way to unlock potential in every voice!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson I like to hear the person sing and discuss the strengths and areas for growth. Then a series of stretches and warmups and technical tips, followed by work on a song of the singer’s choice.
Lesson 2-3In the 2nd and 3rd lessons, we continue to work on new technical tricks to expand the range with more ease and less work from the throat, and discuss more song ideas that fit the singer vision of where they want to be.
Lesson 4-10After a few more lessons that are half technique and half songs, we hopefully will be ready to be more intensive in songs and work up 3 or 4 songs to a level that the si get would be comfortable sharing on front of people.
Lesson 11+Longer term, I like to influence song choice more, and continue exploring more areas of technical challenge.
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonIn the first lesson I like to hear a variety of songs that show the singer’s spectrum. Then I either work on those songs in depth or suggest similar songs in style that fit the singer better.
Lesson 2-3We continue refining songs and add technical exercises to address problems in songs.
Lesson 4-10We agree on a group of 4 songs to polish and refine, and pick technical areas to hone in on.
Lesson 11+We develop a full show of material, so the singer feels comfortable navigating a 10-12 song set.
