About your sewing teacher
Let's get you sewing gorgeously! Starting from any skill level or none at all, tell me your project goals, and I will get you there.
I began formal training in sewing and pattern work at 7 years old. I have been sewing ever since, mainly as a theatrical costume designer, but I also quilt, embroider, pattern draft, paint fabrics, sculpt leather, etc. I've taught beginning hand sewing to 4 year olds all the way up to costume design and alterations for theater students.

Your first lessonAssessment: we see what you can already do, what you want to be able to do, outline your skill or project goals, make a plan, and make a start. If you already have a project or an attempt, please bring it with you.
Lesson 2-3Foundations: these will be skill building lessons, largely, so that you have the skills you need in place before risking your project fabric
Lesson 4-10Transition: our timeline will be entirely based upon your abilities and goals. If your goals are project based, we will begin moving through the steps of your project together as soon as you feel ready and can do the basics. This might look like more sampler work or skill building. For a confident student, it might look like working on their project at home and bringing in the problems to correct and to learn how better to handle the bits they struggle with. For an enthusiastic beginner it might mean wrapping up an intro project and moving on to something more interesting, with a new skill to add.
Lesson 11+Where things get interesting: with a good solid foundation in place, we follow your passions and deepen your knowledge. Want to learn about fabrics and how to work with the tricky ones? Letβs do it! Want to really understand fit and alterations? Weβll get you there! Want to branch out into complex patterns, historical patterns, or even give making your own a try? I can show you how. The fiber world is your plush oyster.
Youth players
Working with kidsFor the 10 and unders I always start with hand sewing with a tapestry (blunt) needle, and craft felt. Itβs a forgiving and inexpensive way to start, and allows them to make small projects quickly as they learn, which helps them to build enthusiasm.
For mature 10 and ups, we start with sewing needles and cotton (unless they prefer felt first) and dive into hand sewing basics. From there I like to branch into one of three tracks: hand sewing and mending, embroidery, or machine sewing
Working with teenagersFor teens, much as with adults, we have to start with what they want to achieve and work backwards from there. All of my foundational skills lessons are appropriate for teens, as are advanced pattern lessons, if they work up to them properly, via the relevant skill building lessons.
What you need to bringFor embroidery: embroidery hoop, pencil or wash away/iron out pen, current project fabric and floss, if applicable
For hand stitching and alterations: current project and matched thread, if applicable, items to be mended, or your sampler to add to.
For pattern work: pattern, chosen fabric, any interfacing and notions called for, measuring tape
For learning machine sewing: I can do this as soon as they figure out the come to you feature and/or my studio is finally set up. If you want to learn to operate your machine youβll need to bring it, with bobbins, power cord and pedal, and a spool of thread, or Iβll need to come to you.
What I can bringNeedles, scissors, thread or embroidery floss, fabric scraps to practice on, seam ripper, pins, cutting mat, fabric weights, and once my sewing studio is set up, I can offer machine lessons on a basic sewing machine
