We'll start by getting you properly set up on the erg: damper setting, foot stretcher height, and how to read the monitor. From there, I'll introduce the stroke in its simplest form, breaking it into the four parts (catch, drive, finish, recovery) and drilling each piece slowly before linking them together. We'll keep the intensity low and the focus entirely on movement, so you leave understanding the sequence and rhythm of a clean stroke.
At this stage we train with purpose toward your goals. We'll structure varied workouts (intervals, longer steady pieces, pacing challenges) and use the data to track progress and target weaknesses. We'll also fine-tune technique under fatigue, since form tends to break down when you're tired, and build the mental side of pushing through hard pieces. The focus here is turning solid technique into real, repeatable erg fitness!
Now that the movement is solid, we start building fitness. We'll work on consistent stroke rates, connecting power smoothly through the drive, and controlling your breathing over longer pieces. Sessions introduce steady-state rowing, interval work, and pacing using the monitor (splits, stroke rate, distance) so you learn to read your own output and row efficiently for longer.
We'll sharpen the order of the stroke (legs, then body, then arms on the drive, reversing on the recovery) and clean up the most common beginner habits like rushing the slide or opening the back too early. Expect lots of pause drills and segmented rowing at a controlled pace. The goal is to make the correct sequence feel automatic before we add any real intensity.
We'll start by talking through your rowing background, training history, and what you're targeting (a 2K PR, longer-distance performance, or general erg fitness). From there, I'll watch you row at a few different rates and intensities to diagnose technical inefficiencies and see how your stroke holds up under load. You'll leave with a clear picture of your strengths, your limiters, and the plan we'll build from.
Now we put it all together under pressure! Test pieces, simulated races, and high-intensity intervals that demand both physical output and technical discipline when fatigued. We'll refine your race plan, sharpen your mental approach to hard efforts, and use the data to track progress and adjust. The goal at this stage is execution: translating fitness and technique into your best possible performance when it counts.
This is where we build performance. We'll structure training across energy systems (steady-state aerobic work, threshold intervals, and race-pace pieces) and dial in your pacing strategy using splits and stroke rate. We'll work on holding target splits efficiently, managing stroke rate vs. power, and developing the ability to surge and recover within a piece. Programming adapts to your specific goals and how your body responds.
We'll go deep on the details that separate good rowers from efficient ones: maximizing the leg drive, sequencing power cleanly through the body and arms, and eliminating energy leaks at the catch and finish. Expect targeted drills, controlled pieces, and immediate feedback using both video and the monitor. These sessions establish your technical baseline and pacing benchmarks.
