Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe most important priority for me is to get to know my student both as a student and as a person. This can help me gauge what their learning style is, what pace is best for them in teaching, what difficulties they are encountering in trying to do their work, and what helps them most (reading, listening to audio, watching Youtube videos, etc.). It is also crucial to understand what their goal(s) are in tutoring. I also like to take a few minutes to learn basic things about my students like what hobbies they enjoy (music, sports, art, etc.) because that helps me use that as a framework to help them understand concepts, and it gives them more of a comfort level. It is important to me that I build a rapport with students, and that they feel comfortable and not as stressed as they do in school.
Lesson 2-3If the student has an assignment, we start to read the assignment together, and allow them to ask questions. If the student does not have an assignment, I like to give options of what skills to work on during our lessons. This way, they can guide their own learning and we can work on specific skills that they need some help with. I always start with foundational basics, questions like: what is the essay about (in their own words, and after pre-reading) what do they understand about the essay, and what is the point of the essay. This way I can see where the student is getting stuck or needs to review skills to help them. I do the same process for reading.
Lesson 4-10By this point, I hope to have developed a good relationship with my students. This is a big goal for me because it allow me to get more creative in how I tutor, and make an environment where can participate more. I encourage the student to be more active in their learning, by allowing more space for them to ask better questions, and express their thoughts. We do some deeper understanding of their assignment, and work towards a level where they feel confident in their work.
