Beginner training plan

Your first lessonGoal: Understand the player’s current skill level and introduce key pickleball concepts - Warm up - Assessment - Basic forehand and backhand shots - Serve technique and consistency - Movement and footwork - Reaction time at the net (volleys) - Proper paddle grip and stance - Basic dinking (soft shots at the net) - Serving basics - Court positioning

Lesson 11+Goal: Fine-tune technique, develop mental strategy, and prepare for competitive play. - Fine-tuning spin and placement - Reading opponents and adjusting strategy - Mastering the “soft game” (dinking and resets) - Playing against different styles of opponents - Match Play: Full games with coaching feedback - Tactical Adjustments: Learn how to recognize weaknesses and adapt during a match

Lesson 4-10Goal: Improve confidence, introduce advanced techniques, and develop court awareness - 3rd Shot Drop & Drive: Developing touch for softer drops - Defensive Lobs & Overheads: Understanding how to use and defend lobs - Doubles Strategy: Communication, stacking, shot selection - Situational Play: Practicing specific game scenarios (e.g., handling fast shots, defending from the baseline) - Conditioning & Reaction Drills: Quick feet exercises, reaction time drills - Regular Game Play: Focus on shot placement over power

Lesson 2-3Goal: Improve control, accuracy, and movement on the court - Serving: Repetition for consistency, aiming for deep serves - Return of Serve: Controlling depth and positioning - Dinking Drill: Accuracy and patience at the net - Volleys & Blocks: Reaction training at the non-volley zone (NVZ) - Footwork & Positioning: Understanding the “transition zone” and moving efficiently - Mini-Match Play: Introduce basic strategy (staying out of "no man's land")

Youth players

Working with kidsWhen teaching kids pickleball, I focus on making lessons fun, interactive, and engaging while building their fundamental skills. Instead of traditional drills, I incorporate games, challenges, and storytelling to keep their attention. Short, high-energy sessions with lots of movement help match their attention spans, so I break lessons into quick 5-10 minute segments. Instructions are kept simple, with plenty of demonstrations and hands-on activities. I also modify equipment and rules as needed, such as using lower nets, allowing drop serves, and even using foam balls for younger players. The emphasis is on hand-eye coordination, basic rallying, and fun footwork exercises rather than strict technique. Serving challenges involve hitting big targets instead of focusing on perfect placement, and cooperative rally games encourage teamwork and sportsmanship. I also introduce basic doubles strategies through playful exercises while fostering a positive environment where kids cheer each other on. By blending skill development with engaging activities, I create a learning experience that keeps kids excited to play and improve.

Working with teenagersWhen coaching teenagers, I balance fun with a more structured approach that challenges them while keeping them engaged. Unlike younger kids, teens are ready for more technical instruction, so I introduce more detailed mechanics, strategy, and gameplay analysis. I still incorporate games and competitive drills, but I also encourage goal-setting to help them track progress. Sessions are structured to include warm-ups, focused drills, and match play, keeping a mix of skill development and practical application. I adjust my coaching style based on their motivation levels—some teens respond well to direct feedback and structured drills, while others thrive in a more exploratory, game-based learning environment. I also emphasize strategy, positioning, and shot selection, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the game. As they improve, I introduce more advanced techniques like spin, pace control, and tactical decision-making. At the same time, I make sure to foster a positive and supportive environment, encouraging good sportsmanship, teamwork, and resilience. By keeping sessions challenging but fun, I help teens stay engaged, build confidence, and develop their skills both physically and mentally.
