About your pickleball coach

After 18 years of racquetball experience, I fell in love with pickleball the first time I played. This simple, fun, and social paddle game, which can also be highly competitive, captivated me immediately. Encouraged by an instructor, I became a certified pickleball coach through the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR) and USA Pickleball in March 2023. Since then, I have been regularly instructing beginner and intermediate players on a weekly basis while continuing to play 5-6 times a week at a 3.5 - 4.0 level.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonStretching & warm-up, paddles & gripping paddles, mechanics of forehand and backhand strokes, serving using volley and bounce serves, and serve returns. End with a short game to introduce the basic rules.
Lesson 11+The student should be confident of all rules, techniques, and strategies by the 11th lesson. If not, focus on the weak areas. Assist the student in finding pickleball locations convenient to them.
Lesson 4-10Practice what the student feels are his/her weaknesses and practice any techniques the coach sees as weak or incorrect. Play a game requiring the student to be familiar with scoring and other rules. Go over differences between singles and doubles matches. Instruct how to play “skinny” singles when only 3 players are available.
Lesson 2-3Review of lesson 1, emphasizing drive serves, soft serves and the dangers with lobb serves. Introduce angle shots and down the line shots. Introduce dinking technique explaining the difference with drive shots. Practice backhand and forehand straight-ahead and cross court dinking. Discuss when to use the lob in a game. Work on weaknesses. Play a short practice game to re-emphasize scoring and rules. By lesson 3, introduce the third shot drop.
Youth players
Working with teenagersI will work with pre-teens and teenagers. Pre-teen lesson plan progression will depend on the children. The major point is to have fun while on the court. Speed of progression of training plan is secondary to fun.
What you need to bringSince we’re playing on outdoor courts, wear athletic apparel consistent for the season and court shoes (no crocs). Cover up or use Sun tan lotion (SPF suitable for your skin tone), as needed. Wear eye protection (tinted if playing in the daylight; clear if playing at night). Bring hydration. Bring your pickleball paddle if you own one.
What I can bringI can provide three pickleball paddles, if needed. The court, net and balls are provided.
