Hi, I’m Rian Weston-Dodds, a 5.0 rated pickleball player and a new coach at the Picklr Scottsdale location. It is indoors, so we can play rain or shine and reserve a court. I’ve been playing for over 4 and a half years and coaching for about 1. I'm PPR certified, and have 54 matches logged in DUPR from leagues and tournaments. I specialize in helping the intermediate player around 3.0-4.0 up their game, but I can also help beginners looking to get their touch and build coordination. I look forward to seeing you on the court! If you need any special accommodations with scheduling, let me know.

Ryan was just what we needed. We took a series of three lessons from him over the course of four days. He met us where we were at skill wise and helped us improve from there. He is really patient, skilled and has a fun sense of humor. He was also very generous with his time and giving us many tips. We would recommend Rian for your next pickleball lesson!

Rian is one of the best local players I’ve seen and has developed a game and playing style independently of other racquet sports experience, making him a great resource for learning pickleball in its most direct, efficient style of play, where the game is played and won at the kitchen, while removing most offensive opportunities from one’s opponents.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFirst I will ask you about your strengths and weaknesses and if there’s something in particular that you want to work on. And then normally I start almost every lesson with a few points of skinny singles to identify any strengths and weaknesses and what we should work on. From there I will give you a few tips and then run some drills to work on them. Throughout the lesson I will continue to give you tips as I identify ideas to help with your game, and we may adjust the drills but still mainly focusing on one particular skill.
Lesson 11+We continue to work on every aspect of your game until you are a well rounded, 4.5+ player, and if we have nothing left to work on, we can just continue to run drills or play games.
Lesson 2-3In each upcoming lesson, we will focus on a different skill that I see that needs to be worked on, following the same format as the first lesson: beginning with skinny singles and following with some tips and drills.

Lesson 2-3In each upcoming lesson, we will focus on a different skill that needs to be worked on, or we will hone in deeper on one specific skill until we’ve mastered it. Most lessons follow the same format as the first lesson: beginning with skinny singles to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and following with some tips and drills to target a specific weakness at a time.

Youth players
Working with kidsIf I’m giving a lesson with kids, I focus on having fun, and helping them get a feel for swinging the paddle and hitting the ball. We would focus on interactive games and drills that would help activate their eye hand coordination if they haven’t had experience with racket sports yet.

What you need to bringIf we’re going to train indoors at the Picklr, all you need to bring are court shoes, and I would also recommend indoor lenses to protect your eyes. For outdoors, make sure you wear weather appropriate attire. In winter it may get cold, but you may also warm up underneath so make sure you can shed a layer. A hat and sunglasses may be helpful, Sunscreen or a light outerwear will help protect you from the sun as well. Tennis our pickleball shoes would be best, but running shoes are ok for occasional use as well. But long term, the rough court surface will wear down your shoe tread.

What I can bringAt the Picklr, they have a plethora of paddle demos to try, as well as ball carts, lots of balls to drill with and ball tubes to pick up the balls. I also have some extra paddles and balls that we can use, and I carry some facial sunscreen as well. If you have any extra equipment that you’d like to bring, feel free to bring it.
