About your pickleball coach

I’m a Level II certified pickleball coach who has taught more than 1,000 players and helped build two of the largest pickleball communities in North America. I’ve competed at a high level, winning gold at the 2023 Ontario Provincial Championships (Men’s Doubles 50+, DUPR 4.6). What makes me a good coach is my ability to break down skills clearly, teach with patience, and help players improve quickly through purposeful drilling and game-based learning. I genuinely love helping people get better and enjoy the sport.

Salma
After just one session, my serve, returns, and dinking were noticeably stronger. Mike focuses on real game strategy, not just drills, and it instantly translated into better play. My partners noticed the difference right away.
Sarah
I’ve taken lessons before, but Mike’s coaching is on another level. I learned more in a 1.5-hour session with him than I did in an entire six-week program elsewhere. The way he explains things just clicks, and my game improved immediately.
Anne
What sets Mike apart is his ability to teach any level. He helped my footwork and shot selection, but he also taught my spouse—who’s brand new—the basics in a way that felt comfortable and fun. He’s truly a top-tier coach.
Asad
Mike makes learning fun and pressure-free. He’s patient, encouraging, and explains things in a way anyone can understand. I always leave his sessions feeling confident and excited to play more.
Jason
Mike has an incredible eye for detail. Within minutes, he spotted the exact issues holding me back and gave me simple, effective changes that made a huge difference. His ability to diagnose and correct technique is outstanding.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonFundamentals & Court Orientation (10–15 min) • Explain court layout, scoring basics, and safety. • Introduce grip, ready position, and basic footwork. • Warm-up with controlled dinks to build feel.
Lesson 11+Guided Play & Coaching Feedback (15–20 min) • Short games with coaching throughout. • Correct positioning, communication, and basic strategy. • Wrap-up with individual feedback and one key takeaway per player.
Lesson 4-10Game-Based Drills (15–20 min) • Cooperative rallying: serve → return → drop → dink rally. • Simple point play focusing on consistency, placement, and resets. • Emphasize shot selection and moving as a pair.
Lesson 2-3Core Skills Development (15–20 min) • Teach and drill the serve and return. • Introduce third-shot drop/drive concepts at a very basic level. • Practice volleys and non-volley zone awareness.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonAssessment & Advanced Foundations • Full player assessment: footwork, paddle path, timing, resets, volleys, and transition game. • High-repetition ball-machine drills focused on contact point, swing trajectory, and consistency. • Introduce advanced concepts: shaping the ball, manipulating pace, and reading opponents. • Set individualized goals and a training roadmap for the coming sessions.
Lesson 11+High-Performance & Tournament Preparation • Customized high-performance drills based on player goals. • Ball-machine patterns mirroring real game stress: speed-ups, jam balls, deep corner drives, and fast kitchen exchanges. • Tournament strategy: shot selection, momentum control, partner roles, and opponent scouting. • Match-play with real-time coaching and post-match analysis. • Ongoing refinement of mental game, consistency, and elite-level patterns.
Lesson 4-10Advanced Strategy, Speed, & Decision-Making • Speed-up patterns and counterattack training using ball-machine randomization modes. • Mastering topspin drives, roll volleys, disguise, and hold-and-go deception. • Advanced dinking: pressure vs. patience, changing trajectory, and creating pop-ups. • Situational play: stacking, switching, poaching, and coordinated team movement. • High-intensity competitive scenarios: hand-speed battles, transition battles, and point-construction drills. • Continuous video and technique feedback to refine mechanics.
Lesson 2-3Precision, Transition & Pressure Drills • Transition zone mastery using the ball machine: controlled drops, speed-ups, and block volleys. • Develop pattern play: serve + 3rd shot, return + 5th shot, and pressure-release resets. • Introduce attack-to-defend and defend-to-attack sequences. • Begin integrating advanced footwork: split steps, pivot resets, and dynamic movement.

Youth players
Working with kids focus on creating a fun, positive, and age-appropriate learning environment where kids stay engaged and confident. I keep instruction simple, using short demonstrations, clear cues, and lots of repetition through games rather than long explanations. My approach blends fundamental skill development—grip, footwork, serving, and rallying—with movement, teamwork, and problem-solving so kids learn while having fun. I use stations, challenges, and mini-games to keep energy high and ensure all kids stay active. The goal is always the same: build solid fundamentals, improve coordination, and help every child feel successful while developing a love for the sport.

Working with teenagersWhen coaching teens, I combine clear technical instruction with fast-paced, competitive drills that keep them engaged. Teens learn best when they understand why a skill matters, so I focus on decision-making, strategy, and applying techniques immediately in game play. I create a positive, supportive environment where they can challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop strong fundamentals while having fun.
