Asking about the students background playing paddle or racquet sports, taking an interest in their desire to learn a new sport, reviewing a few basic concepts about the court, paddle, rules, net, ball & then tossing the pickleball between us to get a feel for the ball. We will then dink cooperatively for remainder of the session and I would recommend a few YouTube tutorials to look at and encourage the student to hit against the wall if one is available.
Depending on the students athletic background I will review position & placement on the court, how to hit the ball, and move from the baseline to the NVZ line. Then a dinking game with me, (a short version of the actual game) and I would explain why dinking is so integral to the game & how dinking slows down stronger hitters (aka bangers).
Next I would review paddle positions, volleys, punch vs block and engage the student with drills from the baseline.
I would explain the difference & how to effectively volley and place winners.
Lesson 3, would be active drills on positioning, where to be on the court, how to move with your partner to cover the middle & lines.
In these lessons we will learn how to serve, where best to serve, the return of service. Also, serve & stay, how to gauge the ball to get set for next hit, strategy, placement, and additional drills to work on communication with partner.
At this point the student will learn scoring and incorporate it into play.
This lesson will touch on when & how to lob, how to retrieve a lob, why & how to stay back. Additional drills include a game called Live Ball and another drill where the student is fed the ball from the teacher & tries to hit or place the ball near the cone or target. The lady 15 minutes, if possible should include a game.
The final lesson will wrap up 1-10 with a Q & A session where teacher will ask questions on shot selection, rules, strategies, and playing time.
