Leila and Dana Jenks
Review from Dana and Leila Jenks about David as a tennis 🎾 coach. David was Leila’s tennis instructor in the summer and fall of 2021. Although Leila was a beginner, having never played organized tennis in her life, David was able to help her become a more assured player from the start. He patiently worked with her on developing the basics, while his love of the game was making our daughter more excited about the classes. David was very internally motivated to see her succeed. Leila at the time was thinking about how once she turned 15 she might want to join the JV tennis team. Now a freshman, she never did, but he made it a fun sport for her with games at the end of practices. David was also very flexible and prompt whenever we needed to rearrange our schedule, and we appreciated that.
Jack Schultz
David was my mentor in tennis and pickleball when I was a young player, especially when I was a teenager. Hes funny and is able to explain things in simple ways for those who need it, but as a more experienced racket sports player I needed the analytical side. He’s good at that as a statistics guy. He knows a lot of random things about tennis and pickleball where it’s like β€œwhy does he know these things.” But I’m glad he’s been my coach, he’s a righty and taught me a lot of different ways to leverage being a righty with different spins and serve grips. Hes a good coach.
David Fernando
Written by David Fernando - I've known David for a couple years now since we joined Syracuse club tennis together and we've played pickleball together and against each other several times. He's been playing racket sports for a long time and is very passionate about sports as a whole even outside of tennis. From playing against him in doubles pickleball, he is really annoying with his ability to pick up balls defensively and be in the right positions. I think these are things you can be taught as a student and Hes a good teacher for this. Tactically, he understands racket sports better than most people ive played with or against. With strengths like those and about a decade of experience with racket sports, I have no doubt he knows his stuff, and would make a pretty good coach.
Kurran Singh Bhandal
Written by David’s practice opponent and fellow Syracuse Club Tennis player - I’d say that he’s very analytical on the court. He’s deliberate with the shots he hits and purposeful with the adjustments he makes based off of the opponents’ play. Through varying his service speed and placement, his forehand directionally, and the interspersed use of slice and spin on the backhand, everything is done for a reason. And importantly, in doubles, David can recognize for himself and me when these shifts need to be made. The adaptability he has is what propels you forward, but aspects like general tennis IQ, speed, and stamina allow him to lengthen points and force errors from his opponents. In saying this, these self-adjustments will cater well to adjusting other individuals behavior patterns on the court, coming from an individual who has coached for 9 years at 2 country clubs, 2 tennis academies, and as a private instructor. David is a quality player and I don’t doubt he would be a quality coach.
Luis McDougall
From Luis McDougall, the tennis 🎾 partner I’ve played with more than anyone in my life - David is a skilled and experienced tennis player with a background in competitive play and leadership. A former high school team captain and multi-year state qualifier, he now plays for the Syracuse University club tennis team. Along with his counterpunching style and analytical approach to offensive gameplay, David excels at reading the game and efficiently understanding players’ strengths and weaknesses. I don’t really play pickleball but when I do play with him, Hes a strong defender and a good communicator of when he’s approaching the net, which obviously is pretty important in this sport. I have personally coached alongside him previously in both tennis and pickleball and would recommend him as a mentor for players of all levels.

How it works

Beginner training plan
Your first lesson1. Rally back and forth for ~15 minutes to gauge skill level. 2. Work on cross court drills to establish target area on groundstrokes for ~20 minutes 3. Work on short game (getting up to the net, where to play at net, and for beginner level players, net strategy and technique)
Lesson 11+Depends on student’s needs
Lesson 4-10Depends on student’s needs
Lesson 2-3Second lesson: More specifically targeted net approach drills, particularly on the backhand, which some students struggle with. Then move to net strategy and footwork Third lesson: How to slice, what to do to play defense effectively and turn from defense to offense

Youth players
Working with kidsMake the lessons more designed toward basic strategy and understanding of how to win and score in the game. Many kids struggle with understanding the scoring so I created a fun way for them to remember.

Working with teenagersTeenagers typically have less patience for rallies so they want to begin to hit harder and be as aggressive as possible. This is particularly true among young male players. So, I will feed that beast and then explain how a more veteran player would deal with over-aggressiveness.

What you need to bring- athletic shoes, preferably tennis court shoes - their own pickleball racket/paddle - water or other hydration - anything else you feel you will need

What I can bring- pickleballs - a positive teaching experience!

About your pickleball coach

MILWAUKEE area! I have now been playing pickleball ever since 2022 when the pickle wave took over. I am advanced in pickleball strategy and technique and would love to help expand the awesome sport! I also play Padel, a primarily Spanish sport. I have a ton of experience in racket sports and have recently started playing in competitive pickleball tournaments, mostly doubles. Tennis has been my greatest passion ever since I made the Varsity Singles roster for my high school tennis team, Nicolet High School, as a freshman. I’ve been coaching for 5 years now and have luckily been able to share my technical skills as an instructor with a local country club near my college campus. A vast majority of tennis skills do translate to pickleball so let me impart my experience on you! I have experience coaching across age groups, from 9-year olds in red ball to 16-year olds fighting to make their high school Varsity teams, as well as the occasional parent looking to up their skills. I happily coach both boys and girls of all ages. Can also coach in Spanish. I am back in Milwaukee County for the summer, where I am a sports intern with CBS. I am now a rising senior at Syracuse University and am not sure if I will continue coaching after graduation. I make sessions in hour package deals, hour and a half package deals (my recommended time), or by themselves, and each session starts at $40/hour. Come learn from your local pickleball expert! Thanks and happy hitting!
