About your pickleball coach

Fueled from a life long passion for racquet sports including playing for UC Irvine tennis 1986-1990, I became a dedicated pickleball enthusiast in January 2021. I started at over 190 lbs and currently am at 160 lbs and in the best shape I have been for the last 20+ years, so I know the benefits of pickleball. Not to mention the wide array of good friends I have made over the years. I currently compete at the Senior Pro level and my DUPR rating is over 5.0 in both singles and doubles. I work with all levels of pickleball players and have coached students now competing at the professional level. I am an IPTPA certified instructor and my teaching philosophy is not just about how to swing the paddle, but teaching the art of pickleball - strategy, spins, footwork, and how to get the most out of your game.

Bill is the best pickleball coach I’ve ever had. In addition to his technical instruction, he provides valuable tactical guidance thanks to his own experience as an active professional player. What’s even more remarkable is the emotional support he offers—as both my coach and my 10-year-old son’s coach, he has helped my child learn how to manage emotions on the court.
Mari S
Bill is patient and objective in his coaching style so it is always very comfortable working with him. Great at observing movements that need to be corrected. He is actively involved in the coaching session.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonExplain the basic strategy and mindset of the game, introduce the critical shots in the game: the dink, the transition shot, and the 3rd shot drive and drop. Focus of lesson one will be the dink and footwork.
Lesson 11+Now we begin to learn advanced techniques, including applying backspin and topspin on our shots, flicks attacks at the net, counter attacks, and lobs.
Lesson 4-10Lessons now will focus on bringing the different shots together to form a cohesive strategy during point play. What determines a high-probability of success in terms of shot selection. And, of course .. how and when to attack our opponents and when to defend and reset the ball.
Lesson 2-3Lessons 2-3 will include dinking, but also the fundamentals of the drop shot from the transition zone and baseline. Also, the fundamentals of a good 3rd shot drive.

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonWith advanced players, I will quickly test and assess your skills with dinking, transitions shots, and drives and drops from the baseline. We may plays some “skinny singles” to find out where you might need attention. From there we will craft a plan together.
Lesson 11+This will depends on your specific needs and areas of development. As you get better, we will be focusing on high intensity drills that require not only fast hands, but quick footwork, and training exercises off the court.
Lesson 4-10Lessons will revisit areas of improvement from previous lessons, but be flexible also to your input and suggestions based on your tournament outcomes or rec play. I might also suggest we play together in some rec play (outside of lessons) so I can observe your play firsthand. We will also introduce new types of advanced shots to your skill set during dink battles. Things like rolls, backspins, lobs, attacks, speed ups, and counterattacks.
Lesson 2-3Our plan after lesson #1 will be to focus on 1-3 areas of improvement. We will execute the necessary drills, use cones as targets, and perhaps use my Titan ball machine to feed so I can watch your form and footwork up close and help correct as required.

Youth players
Working with kidsI really enjoy working with kids because I remember how much I learned from my coach as a young tennis player. Coaching kids includes showing them techniques of the game, but also nurturing their self-confidence, and teaching them the wisdom that “getting good” is a process that requires hard work and patience.

Working with teenagersTeenagers have a lot of distractions these days and what often builds a thriving young adult is something to put their energy into, and goal setting. Pickleball is not just an activity; it will help build self-esteem and friendships with other like-minded teens. More time on the court and interactions with people, less screen time on the phone!

What you need to bringBring your preferred paddle and a positive attitude

What I can bringCRBN paddles upon request, Balls, Grips. Also have Titan ball machine.
