About your piano coach

Hello, my name is Travis and my primary goal is to help each student learn the piano in a way that makes sense for them and is fun. I teach a hybrid of classical training (note reading, finger dexterity, music theory) and learning by mimicry/ear. I teach all student types from ages 6 - 106. A typical first lesson for new beginners includes learning the layout of the piano, key names, and other basic info.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonThe first lesson is always learning how to orient ourselves with the keyboard (key names, how to find them, how to build Major and minor scales), how to hold the hands, etc.
Lesson 11+From there, we begin to increase the complexity of the music we can play through the lessons in the book, we increase finger dexterity through scales and exercises, and we will also begin learning specific songs the student wants to learn. Typically those are done through mimicry until the student's ability to read music reaches the level of the song they are wanting to learn.
Lesson 4-10Generally toward the 10th (ish) lesson we begin learning how to read lined music while increasing the ability of the hands and fingers to play independently.
Lesson 2-3From there, we start in lesson books and get accustomed to using the fingers independently and get more used to playing the keys by their note names.

Youth players
Working with kidsMy goal with kids is yo make the experience enjoyable for them. In part, that is keeping them engaged with music they will like and also providing a place where they can feel c9mfortable making mistakes along their journey.

Working with teenagersI try to incorporate music they are interested in while also selecting pieces that challenges them to grow.

What you need to bringYou may need to purchase some materials such as books or other music. You will also need to have either a keyboard or piano at home for you to practice on.

What I can bringI provide the space, the piano and some of the music needed for each lesson.

Travis is very patient and an excellent musician. He has many years of experience and really makes learning fun!
Connie
I have known Travis since he was 6 years old. I was Travis' original piano instructor. Travis went on to master other instruments and major in music at college. Travis is an excellent musician and if you desire someone that has the capability to teach by notation, teach theory or how to play by ear, he is the one to pick! He is a very kind and compassionate person and will conduct the lesson to fit the individual. If you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced student, Travis can teach you. Whether you are young or more advanced in years, Travis has the knowledge and patience to guide you and help develop your musicianship. Travis has a true love of music and the ability to instill that love in others. I highly recommend Travis as your music teacher.
