About your piano coach

As a professional pianist, I've spent the last 40 years captivated by the nuances of music. My passion lies in nurturing talent and helping students, of all levels, discover the joy and fulfillment of playing the piano. Through tailored guidance and a sprinkle of humor, we'll embark on a rewarding musical journey together. My background combines 25 years as a school music teacher (M.A.Music Ed), and 40 years of performing jazz, pop and classical styles of music. I do have a fondness for swing and bossa nova, too! Students learn quickly that I don’t dictate what songs they must learn; on the contrary, they choose their favorites. The best part. : FIRST lesson is FREE!!

Cheryl isn’t just a great teacher and very knowledgeable about how to teach, she’s a great performer of many genres of music. From the moment you meet her, she makes you feel as though you’re very important, because you are.
Beginner training plan
Your first lessonOur first lesson is a combination of getting acquainted and exploring what music you’d enjoy learning. I like to end a lesson with a game for children and teens (unless they prefer other games): Music Math
Lesson 11+Younger children are ready for many Disney songs at this time (Moana, etc) while middle school and high schoolers might prefer top 40 hits found in sheet music. I encourage teens to still learn a few classical songs even if pop-rock is their favorite style. Adults, would you enjoy learning favorite Beatles songs, Elton, perhaps Blues? Or, I can teach you how to compose your own songs.
Lesson 4-10By lesson three or four (depending on age), you can learn Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’! Also, if you’re a teen or older beginner and want to to learn popular music, we can start learning chords using a special method I started years ago. (Easy).
Lesson 2-3Our second lesson involves hand position and learning the basic 5-finger pattern. This is easy, in a few days you’ll play a little faster.Then add your other hand, play together. You can actually compose a song at your second lesson!
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonThe advanced beginner will learn theory, phrasing and notation more quickly; hence, more songs will be learned (& his/her favorite ones!).
Lesson 11+This depends on age.of course. Additional theory on nomenclature (symbols) is taught.. Students, esp younger ones will learn a variety of styles of music.
Lesson 4-10More advanced students can begin challenging drills: major & minor ascending/descending 5-note patterns in keys C, D, F, G. Students will learn basic songwriting (if they wish).
Lesson 2-3The above plan is general for further lessons.
Youth players
Working with kidsTo make lessons exciting for children, it’s a 2-way street. A good music teacher doesn’t depend on a lesson book & page # to teach. Students want to be inspired and choose their OWN song!
Working with teenagersLike children, teens especially WILL choose their own songs in my lessons! They’ve already developed style favorites of their own. I had a 14-yr old student, however, that just wanted to learn Frank Sinatra songs. All is cool.
What you need to bringNo equipment. I generally teach in student’s homes. This can change.
What I can bringFor beginners, just bring yourself😎 Others, bring any lesson book or material used most recently.
