About your music production coach

As a dedicated Music Production Coach with over 14 years of experience, I empower aspiring artists and producers to transform their ideas into polished tracks. My passion lies in demystifying the world of sound, making complex concepts accessible, fun, and deeply engaging. My journey includes managing a studio at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center in North Minneapolis, where I had the privilege of teaching music production to inner-city youth, an experience that deepened my commitment to fostering creativity and providing hands-on skills to the next generation of music makers. Additionally, I bring extensive real-world expertise from the nightlife scene, having served as a Sound and Lighting Manager and Resident DJ at prominent Minneapolis venues. This background honed my understanding of audio optimization, live sound engineering, and the art of curating immersive sonic experiences, providing me with invaluable skills for teaching students how to produce, mix, and master their unique sound.

Beginner training plan
Your first lesson"Our first lesson is all about getting comfortable and sparking your creativity! We'll start by demystifying music production – what it is, why it's so much fun, and how we'll be making sounds together. We'll dive straight into BandLab, learning the basics of its intuitive interface. You'll lay down your first beats, discover how to add instruments, and even record your first vocal or instrumental idea. The goal is for you to walk out having made something, no matter how simple, and feeling excited about the possibilities. I'll provide a laptop, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer."
Lesson 11+What can a beginner expect from their remaining lessons? "Beyond Lesson 10, our sessions become increasingly tailored to your specific goals and interests. We'll focus on mastering advanced mixing and mastering techniques, exploring complex song arrangements, and potentially delving into live performance integration with tools like the SP-404MKII or Polyend Play+ if that interests you, or even using Ableton Live 12 for demonstrations of more complex workflows. We can work on specific projects, prepare your music for release, or explore more niche areas like Foley, sound design for film, or advanced synthesis. These lessons are about perfecting your signature sound and preparing you for the next steps in your musical journey
Lesson 4-10This block of lessons is where we really start to refine your craft and explore diverse aspects of production. We'll deep-dive into mixing basics (levels, panning, EQ), understanding how to make your tracks sound professional. We'll experiment with different genres, vocal processing, and sound design to expand your creative toolkit. For those bringing their own laptops, this is where we can start exploring more advanced techniques within BandLab, or even introduce the fundamentals of other DAWs if you're ready. We'll focus on developing your unique artistic voice and troubleshooting common production challenges. By the end, you'll have several completed tracks you're proud of, and a solid understanding of the music production workflow."
Lesson 2-3In these sessions, we'll build on your foundational skills. We'll explore more of BandLab's features, focusing on practical techniques like arranging your tracks, understanding basic song structure, and experimenting with different sounds and effects to give your music character. We'll cover concepts like rhythm, melody, and harmony in an approachable way, always hands-on. By the end of these lessons, you'll be able to create a more polished, multi-layered track and have a clearer vision of your creative process. We'll also discuss how to best utilize BandLab's collaboration features."

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonOur initial advanced session is about assessing your current skill set and mapping out a personalized growth plan. I'll ask you to share a few of your existing tracks or project files, and we'll collaboratively identify areas for refinement and new skill acquisition. We'll specifically dive into your workflow in Ableton Live 12, troubleshooting any bottlenecks and introducing you to advanced Session and Arrangement View techniques you might not be utilizing. This lesson will also cover optimizing Ableton's preferences for your system and integrating any hardware you own (like an APC64, which I can demonstrate with). Bringing your own laptop with Ableton Live installed is essential for this and all subsequent advanced lessons."
Lesson 11+Beyond Lesson 10, our advanced coaching becomes highly specialized and project-driven. We'll focus on your specific artistic and technical ambitions. This could include: * Genre-Specific Production: Deep-diving into the nuances of a particular electronic genre's production techniques. * Custom Max for Live Devices: Exploring or even beginning to build bespoke tools for your unique needs. * Advanced Sound Design for Specific Applications: E.g., film scoring, game audio, or experimental sound art. * Live Performance Development: Crafting complete, dynamic live sets, integrating external gear (DI box, Mackie Onyx Artist 1.2, your own instruments), and refining performance strategies. * Artist Development & Release Strategy: Guidance on getting your music heard, understanding distribution, and building an online presence. * Auditing Your Portfolio: Providing critical feedback on a body of your work and helping you refine your best tracks to a professional standard. At this stage, these sessions are truly collaborative, pushing the boundaries of your creativity and technical mastery within Ableton Live and beyond."
Lesson 4-10This extensive block is dedicated to professional-level mixing, mastering, and creative workflow optimization within Ableton Live. We'll meticulously cover topics such as: * Advanced Mixing: Surgical EQ, multi-band compression, dynamic processing techniques, precise reverb and delay implementation, and creating depth and width in your mixes. * Mastering Concepts: Understanding loudness standards, basic stereo mastering chains, and preparing tracks for distribution (though full mastering is a specialized field, we'll cover the fundamentals). * Workflow Efficiency: Utilizing Ableton's Capture MIDI, follow actions, and custom templates for rapid idea generation. * Performance Integration: Deeper dives into the APC64 (which I can demonstrate with), MIDI mapping, and setting up dynamic live sets, potentially incorporating concepts from my SP-404MKII or Polyend Play+. * Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving complex audio issues, latency, and system optimization on your personal laptop."
Lesson 2-3"In these sessions, we'll push beyond basic arrangement and explore advanced sound design within Ableton Live. This includes mastering Wavetable, Operator, and other built-in synths, alongside intricate sample manipulation techniques using Simpler and Sampler. We'll delve into complex effect racks, custom macros, and advanced routing to create unique textures and sounds. Expect to learn about creative side-chaining, advanced automation, and how to utilize Ableton's native devices in unconventional ways. We'll also begin to integrate elements of live performance preparation, focusing on efficient set organization and mapping."

For those interested in more advanced topics or exploring other Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) beyond BandLab, bringing your own laptop is especially recommended to maximize your learning experience."

"My daughter wanted to learn music production, and I stumbled upon this class. Rickey has a fantastic way with teenagers – they made the lessons engaging by focusing on the type of music she loves. She brings her own laptop, and they've already started exploring Ableton, which is amazing. It's so inspiring to see her create her own beats and tracks. As a parent, I appreciate the positive and encouraging environment. It's been a wonderful creative outlet for her!

This music production class is a hidden gem! Whether you're just starting or looking to refine advanced techniques, the instruction is top-notch. The option to learn on BandLab for beginners, or dive deep into Ableton Live, shows great flexibility. The coffee shop location creates a comfortable, inspiring atmosphere that fosters creativity. Rickey and is incredibly knowledgeable and truly passionate about teaching. I always leave feeling more confident and creatively charged. Highly recommend!"

This class is genius! I don't have my own setup yet, so having a laptop provided for the lesson was super helpful. We used BandLab, which was a great introduction to the basics. My instructor was patient and explained things clearly, making sure I understood each step. I'm already seeing how I can apply what I learned to create my own tracks. The coffee shop vibe just adds to the whole experience – so much better than a stuffy classroom!"

I've been dabbling in Ableton Live for a while, but these advanced sessions took my production skills to a whole new level. Rickey truly has deep knowledge, not just of the software but of mixing, mastering, and even integrating hardware like the APC64. Being able to bring my own laptop and work on my projects directly with their guidance in a chill coffee shop environment was fantastic. It felt less like a class and more like a focused, personalized studio session. Invaluable for serious producers.

As a complete beginner, I was intimidated by music production, but this class at the coffee shop was incredible! Rickey made everything so easy to understand, starting with BandLab. It was amazing to walk out of the first lesson having actually created something. The relaxed atmosphere was perfect, and knowing I could take my work home and keep practicing on a free program was a game-changer. Highly recommend for anyone curious about making music!"
