About your music production coach

Morris Porter has taught Music Production and Beats to kids, teens, and young adults for over 10 years utilizing FL Studios and other software. His career begin at Youth Ville Detroit, and continues through various programs at WNUC 96.7 FM. Morris uses easy to follow on screen demonstrations to develop the students timing and rhythm. The first lesson will be an introduction to the FL Studios software. It will include 2 exercises to enhance the students ability to play on time to a metronome.

Your first lesson* Introduction to the FL Studio DAW (Play, Stop, Record, Metronome timing On & Off, Sounds for Lesson 1 Exercise * How to use the Akai MPD218 drum pads * Metronome timing device and how to utilize it when programming beats * Beat Making hands-on workshop to develop basic timing ability using two well-known songs * Create and Record a new beat to enhance the student's creative ability * Saving the finished product * Experiment with additional music loops to further enhance beat making creativity and timing
Lesson 11+Students can expect to produce a full song using the techniques learned. Students will be able to select sounds, program patterns and use patterns to form a song. Students will have the ability to listen to what they created and effectively mix down the final product. The goal is to produce an industry sounding song or rap that will keep the listener engaged.
Lesson 4-10*. Adjusting BPM tempos to various samples * Learn where key tools are located within FLStudio *Fundamental of a Grid * Quantizing and beat correction * How to change patterns * How to use various patterns to form a song * Drums and Instrument separation on tracks * The Mixdown Process * Sample Editing * How to form chords * How to chop drum sounds (Ex. Cymbals, Snares) * How to bounce the mix down to a mp3 or WAV file
Lesson 2-3Lesson 2 * Review the FL studio DAW and the functions discussed in Lesson 1 * BPM's (beats per minute) also known as the Tempo * Learn how to change and adjust beats per minute * Learn how to count and set bars * Engage in a Music Making workshop using chords from different genres to develop ear training and keyboard timing ability * Create and record a new song using the student's chosen chords Lesson 3 * Learn how to locate drums and instruments within the program * Engage in a workshop to listen to various drums and load into the program * Introduction to programming a beat using the keyboard * Introduction to programming beats by clicking the pads within the program * Engage in a workshop to create a new beat using the keyboard and clicking the drum pads * Review any material in question

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonAnalyze and review beats and songs created. Identify and fix any mistakes. Make notes on production habits and identify strengths and weaknesses. Set realistic goals and establish a specific order for song and beat creation.
Lesson 11+Using arrangement strategies when constructing different changes in the song. Make individual patterns for the intro ,verse, hook, and bridge if necessary. Assure that all Instruments and Drums are leveled correctly in the final mix-down
Lesson 4-10Using chord progressions that stand out and identify with the sound that you are trying to achieve. Establishing the correct tempo of the song or rap to keep the listener engaged. Choosing quality sounds that fit the emotion of the song a rap.
Lesson 2-3Practice identifying tempo's in samples and beats. Use the ear training techniques to set bars for different patterns of the song. Continue to experiment with various chords and make notes. Browse through all of the drum sounds in the program and notate the sounds that you particularly like to establish your identity.
