Before his game, my son Tyler was tossing the ball around with teammates but he always hitting the ground or missing. Because I never played, I didn’t know how to help him so I was lost. Then, this nice man wearing a Weymouth Lacrosse fleece came up to me, introduced himself as Mike and asked if he could help my son. I said sure. Mike went over to Tyler and asked him to shoot the ball at the net. After 2 or 3 shots hitting the ground or missing, Mike grabbed his stick. After untying some strings he gave it back to Tyler. Tyler’s shots/passes were now on target. I asked Mike what he did, he said he “fixed the whip.” For the next 15 mins or so Mike was working on Tyler’s throwing catching & cradling. Tyler, who wanted to quit lacrosse because his stick “didn’t work” now gets excited for games. Spoiler, Mike was the opposing teams coach but that didn’t matter. He saw a player who needed help and he helped him. Thank Mike!

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonWhat is their goal (improve skills, make lacrosse team, etc) Once I understand the goal the first lesson will be an assessment of the students current skills. All lessons work off of a “Crawl, Walk, Run” Training Model. Crawl: Explain & Demonstrate skill Walk: Walk thru Crawl phase direction Run: Demonstrate Crawl & Walk directions in real time Equipment Preparation: Make sure students stick & equipment are within regulation & customized to their playing style. First Lesson: Strong Side Cradling, Passing, Catching End of lesson, student will have “laxwork” to train on at home until next lesson.
Lesson 11+Lesson 11: Player Visualization. Lacrosse is as much of a psychological game as it is a physical one. This lesson focuses on how the student transforms not only into a player but an asset for their team. - Positional Responsibilities - “Seeing the Field” & “Making an Impact” - Tricks of the Trade (Best Practices)
Lesson 4-10Quick summary of what the student can expect from Lessons 4-10 (subject to change) Lesson 4: Advanced Cradling & Basic Dodges - Two handed Dodges (Split / Face / Roll) Combine dodges & cradling in “game” scenario. Lesson 5: Weak Side Training: One & Two Hand Cradling Passing, Catching, Groundballs, Shooting (Stick on students weak side for lesson duration) Lesson 6: Assessment Day Student will adequately demonstrate skills learned in Lessons 1-5. Any skill below standard will be worked on after the Assessment. Lesson 7: Checking Checking Rules & Violations Checking Basics (Body & Stick) Checking Mitigation (Offensive Players) Lesson 8: Advance Dodges - Review Split / Face / Roll Dodges Introduce Advance Dodges (Bull/Hitch) Lesson 9: Face Offs - Explanation of Face Off Rules - Player Positioing - Stick Placement - Face Off Violations Lesson 10: Assessment Day Student will adequately demonstrate skills learned in Lessons 6-9 with Lesson 1-5 Reviews. Any skill below standard will be worked on after the Assessment.
Lesson 2-3Quick review: Skills worked on & reassess previous lesson. Lesson 2: Groubdballs & Cradling - Ground ball fundamentals - Strong side, one & two hand cradling Lesson 3: Shooting - Shot type demonstration - Establishing body positioning - How to generate power - Aiming & release

Advanced training plan
Your first lessonBefore the lesson is scheduled, I will contact the advance player to discuss their goals and objectives. Once that is established, I will customize a lesson plan. Lesson 1: Assess Student’s Skillset. Once assessed, I will implement the customized training plan previously discussed between myself and the player. All proceeding lessons will follow a similar pattern until the players goals and objectives have been met.

Working with kidsLike any lesson with kids, you have to make it interesting in fun. First thing in lacrosse is learning how to catch & throw. I usually make games up to help & encourage kids to learn these basic lessons.

Working with teenagersMost teenagers that take private lacrosse lessons are because they either want to make the team or elevate their game overall. Regardless of what their goal is, I have developed a training style, suitable for all skill levels.
