With an impressive musical journey that commenced in 1963, I have dedicated my life to music. At the age of 11, I delved into drums, followed by guitar at 15, and extensive studies in Music Theory & piano during my four-year tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My musical odyssey has included collaborations with legendary artists like Chuck Berry, Albert Lee, and the Blues maestro Roy Buchanan, whom I toured with across California. Over the years, I've shared stages with renowned acts like The Thelonious Monk Trio, The Allman Brothers, Muddy Waters, and many more. I've left my musical footprint on film and TV, composing, producing, and recording my own compositions.
Currently, I manage the esteemed former home recording studio of Glen Campbell, where I offer private lessons and record the music of local talents, enriching the musical tapestry around me. For a comprehensive view of my illustrious career and notable achievements, feel free to visit my website.

“I would like to explain a little bit about my history as a music student to help you understand where my interest in music comes from. Most of the credit for my extreme interest in the drums would have to go to my drum teacher Scott Moyer. He has constantly pushed me to experiment, to expand my musical tastes and to learn musical theory to become a complete musician. Scott encouraged me to study guitar after a year and a half of drums lessons. I am very interested in guitar and music theory so I study them often, but it is usually just to improve my ability to apply the drums in a more tasteful way. Understanding another instrument and studying theory has really helped my drumming. I first met Scott at Amazing Music in the Pacific Palisades, the school where I currently take lessons. It seemed as though every lesson was a new breakthrough. When I started, all of my favorite bands were seventies rock bands. I had no interest in any other kind of music. The more I played, the more different types of music that I began to enjoy. Lately I have taken an interest in jazz and Latin music. Now I study as often as I can the precision and consciousness of time that is taken to a new level with jazz, and I love the Latin beats and fills that are so different from what I studied for so long. Two years ago my school’s music teacher left and I suggested that Scott take the job, and he now teaches me music theory on Tuesday, Guitar and Drums on Thursday and he teaches our school band on Friday. Scott is one of the most influential people in my life; he has truly opened every door to the musical world for me and helped me to realize just how limitless it is.”

I started taking drum lessons with Scott in early 2019. I started from scratch, never touching a drumstick prior to that day. Within the first month of weekly lessons, I had learned how to hold the stick, and was quickly playing simple beginner concepts with fluidity. In the years that followed, lessons were done virtually. However, this did not effect my rapidly growing skillset. Oftentimes, Scott and I create new complex concepts involving syncopation. He creates helpful charts to study from using the Zoom whiteboard function. We apply his termed “rhythmathology,” as well as incorporating other aspects of music theory that he has taught me. Additionally, when he wants to introduce me to a new drummer, he pulls out a cymbal with dozens of signatures that he has been collecting for decades. We then observe their specific style through music and videos. I started learning guitar with Scott completely online, never having an in-person lesson. However, Scott’s teaching methods make it easy for beginners to learn through Zoom. I have been playing guitar for nearly three years, and have learned upwards of one hundred songs. Scott has taught me how to learn songs by ear, which is a helpful skill. Additionally, we cross-reference syncopated drumming rhythms with fingerpicking patterns. This allows for me to easily create new ideas that I can add to my arsenal. I have learned music theory concepts such as modes, song form, scales, note intervals, chord structures, soloing techniques, and more. Overall, Scott is an excellent instructor and a great human being that is helping a new generation of musicians learn and grow.

“Scott, studying with you was pivotal in my drumming education; you were able to help me to learn the fundamentals of drumming grip, time, groove, and the stylistic differences within the art of set drumming. You provided an environment for me that was very conducive to learning, and you were supportive and helpful in this process. You opened my ears to the drumming world, and brought new music to me that I otherwise would not have heard, or been able to appreciate the drumming within it. You introduced me to drummers like Steve Gadd, Narada Michael-Walden, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, and many others. I remember one time I brought you a recording of “La Grange” by ZZ Top, and asked you what the drummer was doing; you taught me how to shuffle, and let’s just say that now I have one of the best shuffle grooves anywhere. You taught me how to listen, and how to be a musical drummer who plays with a band instead of being a show-off “stunt” drummer. Lastly, when my father passed away, I remember you showed me genuine compassion and support throughout this difficult period in my life, and through drumming, provided me with an outlet to help me deal with my loss. For these reasons, I think you are the best teacher that I could have possibly had, and I thank you.”

When I first got interested in music and specifically the guitar three years ago, I knew I wanted to not just play, but truly understand music. That’s why finding Scott has been a transformative journey for me. From the outset, Scott has been more than a teacher; he has been a guide, mentor, and source of inspiration with his passion for and knowledge in music. Scott taught me the scales, how to play chords, finger formulas and rhythms while also explaining the underlying music theory. He has been very patient with me since none of these came natural to me and I had to try many times till I got more proficient at them. Our lessons over Zoom have been very effective. The Zoom lesson diagrams and designs Scott incorporates into the lessons are not just innovative, they're incredibly effective. They compliment the learning process and have become great reference material for me to go back and review prior concepts we had covered. For anyone who wants to learn music or get better at playing an instrument, I highly recommend Scott Moyer as your teacher and guide in your musical journey.

I have studied music with Scott Moyer for two and half years. I studied drumming, singing and music theory with him. Scott is an encyclopedia of music. He is unbelievably knowledgeable about so many aspects of music: guitar, piano, singing, drumming, composing, music theory.. you name it. And he is very willing to share his knowledge and skills. It has been a wonderful journey for me to gain knowledge about western music by studying with Scott. My skills and appreciation of music has increased significantly since I have taken his classes. He is a teacher whom I would highly recommend to anyone who would like to study music.
