As a student in the jazz guitar program, I have felt secure and satisfied with my instructor for my applied lessons course. Throughout both semesters I have been consistently challenged to step outside my comfort zone and take a new grasp on how to approach each issue that I’m facing within my playing. This semester I have found that the things that have worked the best within Mr. Harris’s program have been his discretization of each song on the required tune list. When the tune list was dropped, we went over the chords and melody of each song within only the first couple weeks of it being posted. This helped me become extremely prepared to talk about and play each song in my combo and practice. This also aided me as I learned the general foundation for each song before many people I talked about the tune list with. Something else that has remained helpful within the lessons has been the chord-study assignment where I am being asked to annotate each lead sheet with the arpeggios and available scales to play during the chords. This has significantly improved my knowledge of the changes with the songs on the tune list and translated to helping me for many others.
