Beginner training plan
Your first lessonMy approach with beginning students is to ask them what they want to learn and we start there because I have found from teaching many years that’s the best way to motivate beginning students to learn.
Lesson 11+In lessons 11 and on beginners will learn how to improvise using scales, be able to play entire songs, and move on to higher concept such as music theory and more intermediate/advanced techniques such as alternate picking and hammer on and pull offs.
Lesson 4-10In lessons four through ten beginners will be able to play on about 3 to 5 different songs and start working toward putting licks, riffs, and chords together in time.
Lesson 2-3Beginning students can expect in lessons two and three to start to solidify some basic skills, such as tuning, right hand picking, and left-hand chords as well as get a clear idea of what direction we are going.
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonMy first lesson with an advanced player would be to gauge what their primary areas of interest are on the Guitar and develop a game plan to dig deeper there.
Lesson 11+Lessons 11 and on for advanced players would include digging deeper into higher concepts of whatever their primary areas of interest are such as sweep picking for metal, improvising over changes in jazz, advanced right hand techniques in classical, or chicken picking for country.
Lesson 4-10Lessons 4 through 10 for advanced players would be to start to improvise or learn solos over their primary area of study such as metal or jazz as well as put together songs in their entirety.
Lesson 2-3Lessons two and three for an advanced player would be to introduce repertoire and techniques in whatever their primary areas of interest are such as jazz, metal, country, etc…
Youth players
Working with kidsI adapt lessons when I work with kids to include silly and fun techniques and teaching styles, but I also do not dumb it down for kids because from my experience teaching kids they are a whole lot smarter and more mature than people give them credit for.
Working with teenagersI adapt my lessons with teenagers to include practice regimens that emphasize discipline and technique as well as incorporating what they are really interested in. This way teenagers learn that guitar is fun, but it also comes with self-discipline. This is a valuable life lesson too.
