About your guitar coach

I have been a touring musician for over a decade, played everything from Beatles tribute to ukulele and worked alongside some of the best musicians in the world. When I’m not touring I enjoy sharing knowledge and inspiring students of all ages to achieve their musical goals. My expertise lies in the music of the Beatles but I also love music as diverse as Bob Marley to Hendrix to Pink Floyd.

Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI will begin by teaching you the basics of posture, hand placement, and proper strumming techniques. We can talk a bit about what experience you have had if any and find out your goals you have so we can design a curriculum that will help you accomplish them.
Lesson 11+At this point a student should have the ability to begin learning songs on their own as well as having a clearer picture of the kind of style that suits them best, ie fingerstyle, singer songwriting, or just jamming.
Lesson 4-10We will go deeper into the theoretical concepts that apply to the songs and music we are working on as well as refining the songs in our repertoire. Students can expect to have a good understanding of the key concepts that are relevant and connected to the songs we are learning.
Lesson 2-3It depends on the student but by this time we should have a song or two that we are working on as well as some theory concepts that we can discuss.
Advanced training plan
Your first lessonI will assess your skills and try to determine what your strengths and weaknesses are so we can design a curriculum that best suits you.
Lesson 11+The sky is the limit at this point. Advanced techniques of strumming, fingerstyle, chord solos, jazz songs and jazz theory are some of the concepts we will be exploring. Additionally Beatles and classic rock as well as contemporary songs can be used as a template to explore deeper musical concepts.
Lesson 4-10In addition to expanding our repertoire, students can expect to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of music theory and how it applies to the songs they love.
Lesson 2-3We will move through some theoretical concepts and apply them to actual songs so that the student can integrate them fully into their understanding.
Youth players
Working with kidsI know that each child has their own special way of learning and so my first goal is just to make sure that they remain interested. I believe it is a balance of challenges that are attainable and and an overall lighthearted approach that keeps kids wanting to learn more. As a parent I know that if a kid is truly inspired to learn something they will blow your mind wil what they are able to accomplish!
Working with teenagersTeenagers are great to work with because they have the ability to focus and are usually motivated to learn because it is something they want to do. But the same basic rule applies that it has to be fun and challenging at the same time.
What you need to bringPlease bring a ukulele. I can bring an extra ukulele if you want to trial a lesson or if you are visiting and don’t have one, just let me know!

Alastar is a great teacher, and he always makes sure I understand everything about guitar and ukulele (I do both). He always breaks down the lesson or subject whenever I get confused, so I am always confident after classes and can have fun and show my parents. Alastair has a gift for teaching guitar, as he has the ability to connect with you no matter what level you’re at. I went to Berkeley College of Music, but they seemed to throw too much at once and it gets hard to keep up, as the pace is frantic. Alastair seems to have a more fun and positive approach. I never thought I’d be able too finger pick but now I seem to have a knack for it. I never would have done it without him!
