With decades of experience playing and approaching a decade of coaching, I am deeply immersed in the world of golf. A member of the Colorado Golf Association and boasting a USGA GHIN Handicap in the single digits. I'm now focusing on helping others. From receiving repeat special invitations to prestigious events like the Golfweek US Senior Challenge to participating in PGA-sanctioned events, I've now transitioned into coaching. Hailing from Ventura County, CA, I developed an enduring love for the game from a young age. Today, I find myself even more passionate about golf, honored to coach others professionally. Your first lessonIntroduce oneself to one another and get an understanding of the student's goals. We'll discuss the fundamentals such as grip, stance, and what a proven successful swing looks like for most. Students will begin learning the rules and etiquette as well. Additionally, the coach will send a written recap after the lesson, highlighting what was covered.
Lesson 11+After the initial 10 lessons and a decent amount of practice, the student should now possess the skill set to shoot an average round of golf. Therefore, we'll work on advanced methods of improvement. Incorporating practice drills aimed at specific areas of real course shot making. Additionally, similar to the other stages, the coach will send a written recap after the lesson, highlighting what was covered and offering homework geared toward improvements in all stages of golf.
Lesson 4-10During this period we'll begin making improvements toward knowing the club distances. Meaning you'll learn to choose which club to use from any distance away from the target. We'll continue honing in on the appropriate grip, stance, weight transfer, and swing mechanics. This period will also be a confidence-building experience. Accomplished by distance control, accurate reading of greens, and working to better understand golf course management. The coach will use proven practice drills to strengthen any weakness in the student's game. Additionally, the coach will send a written recap after the lesson, highlighting what was covered.
Lesson 2-3Reiterating the importance of the student's goals to the coach. Making the lessons about you, the student. There will be a judgment-free zone during the lessons. A place to be you. A place to improve at a pace suited to the skill level of the student. During this lesson period, we'll continue to work on grip, stance, and swing mechanics. We'll be introducing the fundamentals of chipping, putting, and learn a few high-level techniques aimed at making the game more fun while shaving strokes. The instructor will introduce various coaching aids and drills into the lessons. Additionally, the coach will send a written recap after the lesson, highlighting what was covered.
What you need to bringPlease bring the following to our session; golf clubs, golf glove, golf shoes preferably, and please wear comfortable attire, Tees will be provided for days we work on tee shots. Golf balls will/can be provided for days we work on putting. The instructor will use a range-finder in order to document yardages per club and to teach the nuances of the device. You're encouraged to bring your own range-finder if a unit is available/owned. The use of an alignment stick will be utilized; Students are encouraged to bring their own alignment sticks if they choose.
What I can bringPlease note: The instructor has left-handed and right-handed men's clubs available as loaners if needed. Additionally; men's and women's putters can be available for loan too. No equipment fee will be assessed.

Can you say 'optimistic.' Well its how I feel after a series of lessons from Mr Powell. You totally understand me and my abilities. We worked at a pace equivalent to my game. This has been a pleasing experience. I don't mind spending big bucks on new clubs now, b/c Im certain on one thing, it'll be money well spent, similar to my lessons with you. Knocking 'em straight and bending the ball now too, never thought that was possible. But draws are now my go to (getting those much needed extra yards to be competitive at the club). 'I am grateful to James for helping my 10th grade HS kid with their golf instruction. They had aspirations to make the HS golf team (next year as a Junior). James worked with us for 20 sessions over 2 months; low and behold, they made the HS team. What makes us so appreciative, is my kid had only played recreational golf for a couple of years. I can't say enough good about my coach JP. He met me at a location away from his normal coaching golf courses. That was impressive. Things got better too. He allowed the use of his own extra set of clubs, left handed none the less. It's rare for someone to be as accommodating in this day and age. Oh and the lesson, super valuable.
